The Hilton Easton…..a picture perfect poster of the best of Columbus…but just like every diamond…there were but only minor flaws here…..
First impressions are the lasting ones, and from the moment you are picked up at the airport in a chauffer driven Mercedes Limousine (complimentary service) to arrival at the hotel, there is no doubt when you motor into the courtyard of this massive specimen of architectural prominence you have arrived at a 5 star full service hotel. Beautifully landscaped courtyards and in-laid brick walkways are the focal centerpiece of your arrival but are just a small sampling of the richly elegant settings you are about to encounter. The staff is extremely friendly and inviting all dressed in stately uniforms. Check-in was a snap and the elevators are but 20 steps from check-in. The lobby has ample couches and comfy chairs and don’t worry about toting your luggage anywhere for there is real service here. The rooms were nicely laid out with extra couches and chairs, a desk, and a large flat panel TV on a swivel. King size bed with a comfy mattress and half dozen pillows provided for a good night’s rest. The room was extremely clean except for the carpeting which was overdue for refreshing. This seems to be a problem with Hiltons, the same we experienced in Evansville, Indiana. The carpeting, albeit appears clean, shows every spot and wear pattern. That was but a minor flaw along with the absence of free Wi-Fi in the rooms. This is an outdated hotel business model and is plainly irking to hotel guests as a cheap attempt to wrestle every nickel from guests along with high charges for local phone calls. Even the airports have dropped this attempt to collect for Wi-Fi service as more than 50% of cell phones today have IP and data service. There is free Wi-Fi in the lobby only and it may be just a feeble sophomoric attempt to get more business traffic into the lobby and lounges, but if you are a savvy computer user, fire up your computer in the lobby and connect to their system… and it will then work in your room afterwards without charge. The business center at this Hilton rates a C minus as nothing compared to the business centers at Sheraton Key West A++ and the Marriott Courtyards grade A in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Hilton redeems itself in other areas with higher grades for the exercise and pool facilities.
Center stage in the hotel lobby is a huge inviting lounge area with fireplace, massive couches and chairs and plenty of seating with service bar and food service. There is also a Sports Bar with ample seating, pool table, games and lots of big flat panel TV’s. The food here was excellent and reasonably priced. And for those balmy summer nights there is outdoor food service on a veranda overlooking nicely landscaped areas…just right for cozy dining. The breakfast buffet was excellent and worth your interest to start the day right with an ample assortment of good hot food and nutritional offerings. I don’t often eat at hotels, however, both quality and quantity of food at reasonable pricing made for an easy decision.
Don’t bother renting a car to do the sights fearing boredom. Right across the street within walking distance and for many blocks to and fro is the best shopping and entertainment zone in Columbus named Easton Towne Center….Sidewalk cafes, restaurants, entertainment, the best in shopping and assorted venues bigger than a major shopping center, yet suited for a great afternoon and evening walk on a balmy summer day. The Hilton provides to and from transportation with their courtesy limo.
If you’re planning a regional meeting spot for business associates this is a perfect setup to satisfy your entire group’s needs. I found it worth the extra here and there to avoid other costs of rental cars and other expenses….yet I did not have to worry about groups traveling out in cars and the potential for drinking issues later. The Hilton and the Easton Towne Center provides the best of both worlds and you will be impressed with the accommodations and its connection to Easton Center activities available for your group.
Overall, the service excellence of the Hilton’s staff overshadows any minor flaws noted. I rate this hotel experience as 5 star and worth your consideration. When departing, I found myself wishing I could have stayed one more day.
