“Expected more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2013

I have stayed at this hotel twice, and have yet to receive a decent view, despite requests. The walls are too thin and we could hear everything the rambunctious neighbors were saying during their 4a.m. party as well as in the hallways. The city-view rooms tend to be smaller, with tiny bathrooms. The atrium rooms are larger but you are sometimes stuck w/pool noise and no heat control. Also, the elevators tend to be temperamental. It's all very strange. I have stayed here for the location to the casino, mall etc., but I believe I will venture out to other hotels next time I'm in town.

Hello feex_1 and thank you for writing your review. We sincerely apologize for falling short during your visit, especially the situation regarding noise issues. Regarding our room sizes, each of our 441 guest rooms is totally unique in size and lay-out due to the historic nature of our beautiful hotel. Being that our property is over 90 years old, some such quirks do exist. Once again we apologize and we do hope to see you again soon.

My wife and I were in town for the Christmas Story convention from 11/28/13 to 12/01/13. We arrived on Thanksgiving and found that the place was pretty much empty. We thought that would work in our favor but, apparently, the level of service sucks no matter how many people are there. We had nothing but problems with the front desk who had no idea, whatsoever, of what was going on anywhere in the city or any recommendations of what to do. The bar in the lobby (I don't know the name) was the worst place ever. That first night, there were only a few people in the bar but the bartender still took about 20 minutes to make our drinks. I had only ordered a beer and still had to wait a while for it. This was a continuing theme at that bar for the rest of the stay but the wait time grew progressively worse. At one point, the bartender began getting huffy with us and acted like he was doing us a favor by even taking our orders. That same guy then took forever to make drinks and would go on to someone else before taking our payment. We weren't sitting in the bar so we wanted to pay and get back to where everyone else was in the lobby. My friend grew tired of waiting and left to go back to his seat. When the bartender noticed that, he got upset at me and started making rude comments. I made no bones about it with him that it was due to him not taking payment in a timely fashion. I imagine that scored me no points with him. Overall, the bar was horrible and over priced (you know, because they have you over a barrel).

The room was tiny. I don't mean that it was smaller than we expected, I mean it was smaller than anyone could expect. The bed pretty much took up the entire room. The room appeared to be clean enough, but an inspection of the bathroom proved otherwise. There was hair on the floor which could not have come from us since we just walked in. While I am on the topic of the housekeeping staff, I will mention my other peeve with them. They didn't get to cleaning the room until after 3 PM, which was a problem since we were back in the room by that point and found that they hadn't been through, yet. Luckily, we were going back out and they came in while we were out but that was a close call.

The heater in the room had an adjustable thermostat but you couldn't tell from looking at it which way was warm and which was cold. It needed to be put at the hottest possible and set to run continuously because the window was drafty and felt like it was partially open.

The bed and pillows were comfortable, which is a big part of any hotel stay.

The other couple we were traveling with had a problem with their credit card company which resulted in a problem with the billing at the hotel. As a solution to this, the hotel decided that it would be acceptable to use our credit card for their payment in the meantime. The problem was that we hadn't been consulted on this nor had we authorized it.

This other couple had another problem which was a touch nastier, too. Their toilet had overflowed one afternoon and they made the appropriate notification to the front desk. Hours later, it still hadn't been fixed. They contacted the front desk again and found out that someone had gone to the room but couldn't find anything wrong with the phone at all. This was where they became very upset and explained that it had nothing to do with the phone; the toilet had overflowed. The operator stated the last person must have screwed that up and she would send someone up right away. It was still another few hours before that was fixed.

There are 4 elevators that serve the hotel and one was out of service. This became a problem on Saturday when the hotel went to about 75% capacity and everyone was fighting for an elevator. We ended up waiting for quite a while for an elevator to come along to take us up to our room during what seemed to be a peak hour. Likely, everyone was checking in at that hour but it was just unacceptable to have an elevator down like that. I can only imagine what it is like when they are at full capacity.

The location was great and close to many things but I think there is another hotel on the other corner of Public Square that would probably be better to go to.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with double beds, those rooms are larger.

Unfortunately did not have a nice experience at this hotel. Stayed for one evening during the 2013 Cleveland Winterfest and upon returning to hotel for evening about 11PM there was a very large/loud group in room next door. The language/converstion and volume was very unpleasant. After about 2hours we called front desk and was told it would be addressed. Took almost 30-45 minutes upon which it quieted down but started up again later. Our rooms had an adjoining door which they kept tryting to open (fortunately it was locked). Upon check out I was asked about our stay and when I commented it was not pleasant the clerks reply was 'have a nice day'. Considering it was over $250 for one night I would have expected better service. I will not choose this location again for my next visit in downtown cleveland.

Room Tip: Ask for a room either on lower floors (below pool) or on outside of building. THis is because pool...

Stayed here for two nights for a business conference and had a great time. It was in a great spot, we walked almost everywhere. Only used the car once to visit Ohio City. They helped us pick out great spots to eat and sent up a fridge for our leftovers free of charge. Would stay here again.

In full disclosure we stayed at a no frills motel the night before, making this hotel extremely enjoyable. The room was huge and the beds were very comfortable. We walked to the baseball park from here with no problem. The cool street with restaurants is also a few minutes away. One of the men in our group really loved that the casino was a 3-minute walk as well. Again, great location. We had no problems with the AC or any other amenities. Our room had a view of the Courtyard with the gym and pool downstairs, neither of which we used. Great rate, would stay here again. The only con was the late check-in time we had.

KristyP, thank you! It sounds like you had a great time while visiting. The area you mention with the restaurants and brick walkway is the East 4th Street area - always a good choice for dining and fun. Thanks again and we hope to see you again!

We stayed at the Renaissance with 3 other couples as we were celebrating two birthdays. Excellent location, hotel is beautiful, beds are excellent, but....3 of the four rooms were down one hallway and everyone had same complaint on Sunday morning...didn't sleep well, room was too hot. We tried adjusting the very old AC/Heater but it wouldn't go cold. First experience like this in this hotel as we've stayed here previously and had no issues.

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms in the 970 or above.

Keith, thank you for visiting. We apologize for the problems you experienced with the AC system. As you are aware, our beautiful historic property was built in 1918 and particular quirks such as our HVAC system, which does pose some issues for us, do exist. The public areas are luxurious and impressive. Our room was spacious and quiet because it was on the inner atrium of the hotel. We enjoyed our stay partly because of the history of the place and also because of its location. The central Cleveland area is looking very smart now and there are lots of bars and restaurants full of people. We also ate in the Hotel bar - quite pricey but fresh and tasty with generous servings.
