“Beautiful old hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

This is a lovely property, but it is old. It gets a bit chilly in the rooms, and it was only late October when I stayed. The service was friendly, the rooms were clean and the club lounge was very convenient. There is a nice pool and fitness center too, and the hotel is attached to a mall and movie theater all accessible without going outside. There is a wonderful bar and seating area in the main lobby, a nice place for drinks and even doing business. If you mind noise, the rooms fronting public square are not soundproof, but I truly enjoyed the talented saxophone player outside my window. If you are willing to go with the flow, this is a very nice place to stay.

Room Tip: The rooms fronting public square are really nice, but can get a little noisy in the evening.

I spent 4 late-October days in Cleveland for a conference, with Renaissance as the conference hotel.

I love old hotels: My wedding night was spent at the old Bellevue-Stratford in Philly; the Hotel du Pont in Wilmington was our "go-to" getaway for years (no longer), and our favorite D.C. hotel is The Willard.

I really want to love the Renaissance - the public areas retain elements of grandeur, the rooms are large and comfortable, the lobby bar is a nice place to hang out, and the staff were uniformly warm and welcoming.

Old hotels are supposed be like movie sets, or grown-up versions of "make-believe" - feeling your heart jump as you watch your jeans-clad spouse transformed into a 40's matinee idol by merely sharing a table with you in a grand hotel's bar. With the Renaissance, the economic straits surrounding the hotel (the empty streets, the homeless person using a lobby bathroom as their shower) intrude into the fantasy I so much want it to be.

They do try hard - and I hope they succeed. If you're in Cleveland, consider the Renaissance as your base. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and some nice restaurants (see my reviews of XO and Blue Point Grille) are easy walks. It's just hard to close your eyes to what's around.

Room Tip: If you're flying to Cleveland, the Renaissance is a $2.65 train ride from the airport. The train...

Gjmalcyon, we love your romantic review of our beautiful property! How could we not appreciate a review where our 100 year old establishment is referenced as a dowager? We appreciate your support and your kind words. One item that does give us pause is the situation you note regarding a possible homeless gentleman. Our security team works diligently to assure the safety and security of the hotel. Our general manager would love to speak with you personally about this situation and should you be interested, you may email her at rencleveland@renaissancehotels.com. Once again, we appreciate you visiting and we're excited to hear about your positive experiences at Blue Point Grille!

My girlfriend and I stayed one at the Renaissance Hotel and will probably not return. First off, the location is excellent, very central and close to all the sporting arenas, shopping, and dining. Their is even a mall (unfortunately rundown) and casino connected to the hotel. If location is all you are looking for than this is a great place. The decor and overall design is very elegant and nice to look at. The atrium and pool area is also a pleasantly nice place to hangout.

We didn't use room service or call the front desk so I cannot comment on that but the check-in process went smoothly.

Now for the bad, hotel parking is $25/night which is a little high but but considering its downtown fairly reasonable. The problem is that their is not direct entrance to the hotel from the parking lot. You have to leave the parking lot and walk past the parking gate to get into the hotel which is a pain if you need to go back to your car. Their is also plenty of parking across the street for about half the price.

The hotel is very noisy and the paper thin walls didn't help. I could clearly hear people's conversations in the hallway from the bathroom as I brushed my teeth. We stayed down the hall and away from the elevators but could still hear people throughout the night as they passed by.

As far as the room goes, everything was nice and clean except for the bathroom. The bathroom although clean was in need of an upgrade. The toilet looked like that of a public restroom and the bathtub floor was squishy as if there was water stuck underneath. It was sub par compared to the rest of the room. Would have also like to have had a fridge and free Wi-FI.

We stayed in three different hotels that weekend (the other two being Sheratons) and this one was the worst stay (although not horrible) considering the price. Luckily I got a good deal, their is not way I would pay normal weekend rate. I can only recommend this place if you are staying with a group and not looking for a romantic "luxury" experience.

Room Tip: High floor with atrium view and research parking.

Hello ohhneill and thank you not only for visiting, but for taking the time to write such a thorough review. Your comments have been passed to our general manager for her review. We particularly value your comments on our parking lot and the guest bath. Without comments like yours, we are unable to improve. We sincerely apologize for any disappointment regarding noise. Our beautiful historic property is nearing 100 years in age and while major renovations have occurred throughout the years, certain quirks do still exist. Once again, we appreciate your stay and hope that you will return again in the future.

My stay at the Renaissance was great! My wife and family threw me a suprise 40th Birthday Party in LIttle Italy. Dinner was over and the party moved over to the hotel. It was the first time I had been there in years. Needless to day the staff and the property is still superb. The room was very clean. The pillows and bedding are awesome. The location is prime.. We made our way over to the Horseshoe Casino without having to walk outside!

We were there for a convention. Otherwise, the rates would have convinced us to look somewhere else. Our rooms were top notch...clean and beautifully furnished. We loved the nostalgic feel of the 40's. We found that going to the connecting mall provided us with a more reasonable cost for lunches. The hotel is in a prime location for walking to most everything in the downtown district.

I would've given this 4 stars but that would've given this hotel a very good rating and while it wasn't VERY good it was certainly better than average.
The location alone is great. Within walking distance to a lot of attractions in Clevleland. I was in town for the Rock n Roll 1/2 Marathon- all the festivities and finish line were right outside the front doors of the hotel
The rooms and amenities are pretty nice, it's a classic older hotel if you like that type of look you will love this hotel.

The only reason I didn't give this place a little better rating is because the front desk staff on a few occasions seem totally disinterested ( not all of them but a few) at times AND the fact that I had requested a late check out NOT very late but around an hour til noon and was told that they were not not giving late check outs but I could pay $30 for late checkout. Ummm... That is the first time I had ever heard of that before AND I travel a lot. I just thought it was odd and somewhat of a cash grab That most people at the hotel were there for the marathon and would cut it close to checkout I could almost understand if it was a Fri or Sat but on a Sunday? Not thinking they needed to turn the rooms that fast.

$20 to self park was just a bit much you might be able to find cheaper rates across the street.

goneinsixtyseconds, thank you for staying and for taking the time to write. While we do not typically charge for a late check-out, at times we do in fact include a fee when several requests are made at the same time during higher occupancy times. We apologize for your disappointment and hope that you will return again in the future.

Had a great weekend in Cleveland, using this hotel as a base. Walking distance to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and some excellent restaurants. Very clean and comfortable with big, mushy comforters and great Aveda products in the bathroom. The dining in the hotel was pricey as hell, but very good. Gym is small but decently stocked. Would stay again.
