“Great Location but Noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

My girlfriend and I stayed one at the Renaissance Hotel and will probably not return. First off, the location is excellent, very central and close to all the sporting arenas, shopping, and dining. Their is even a mall (unfortunately rundown) and casino connected to the hotel. If location is all you are looking for than this is a great place. The decor and overall design is very elegant and nice to look at. The atrium and pool area is also a pleasantly nice place to hangout.

We didn't use room service or call the front desk so I cannot comment on that but the check-in process went smoothly.

Now for the bad, hotel parking is $25/night which is a little high but but considering its downtown fairly reasonable. The problem is that their is not direct entrance to the hotel from the parking lot. You have to leave the parking lot and walk past the parking gate to get into the hotel which is a pain if you need to go back to your car. Their is also plenty of parking across the street for about half the price.

The hotel is very noisy and the paper thin walls didn't help. I could clearly hear people's conversations in the hallway from the bathroom as I brushed my teeth. We stayed down the hall and away from the elevators but could still hear people throughout the night as they passed by.

As far as the room goes, everything was nice and clean except for the bathroom. The bathroom although clean was in need of an upgrade. The toilet looked like that of a public restroom and the bathtub floor was squishy as if there was water stuck underneath. It was sub par compared to the rest of the room. Would have also like to have had a fridge and free Wi-FI.

We stayed in three different hotels that weekend (the other two being Sheratons) and this one was the worst stay (although not horrible) considering the price. Luckily I got a good deal, their is not way I would pay normal weekend rate. I can only recommend this place if you are staying with a group and not looking for a romantic "luxury" experience.

Room Tip: High floor with atrium view and research parking.

Hello ohhneill and thank you not only for visiting, but for taking the time to write such a thorough review. Your comments have been passed to our general manager for her review. We particularly value your comments on our parking lot and the guest bath. Without comments like yours, we are unable to improve. We sincerely apologize for any disappointment regarding noise. Our beautiful historic property is nearing 100 years in age and while major renovations have occurred throughout the years, certain quirks do still exist. Once again, we appreciate your stay and hope that you will return again in the future.

My stay at the Renaissance was great! My wife and family threw me a suprise 40th Birthday Party in LIttle Italy. Dinner was over and the party moved over to the hotel. It was the first time I had been there in years. Needless to day the staff and the property is still superb. The room was very clean. The pillows and bedding are awesome. The location is prime.. We made our way over to the Horseshoe Casino without having to walk outside!

We were there for a convention. Otherwise, the rates would have convinced us to look somewhere else. Our rooms were top notch...clean and beautifully furnished. We loved the nostalgic feel of the 40's. We found that going to the connecting mall provided us with a more reasonable cost for lunches. The hotel is in a prime location for walking to most everything in the downtown district.

Jack, thank you for staying and for writing your review. We appreciate the kind words. Our historic hotel actually opened in 1918 and has been in near continual operation ever since. I would've given this 4 stars but that would've given this hotel a very good rating and while it wasn't VERY good it was certainly better than average.
The location alone is great. Within walking distance to a lot of attractions in Clevleland. I was in town for the Rock n Roll 1/2 Marathon- all the festivities and finish line were right outside the front doors of the hotel
The rooms and amenities are pretty nice, it's a classic older hotel if you like that type of look you will love this hotel.

The only reason I didn't give this place a little better rating is because the front desk staff on a few occasions seem totally disinterested ( not all of them but a few) at times AND the fact that I had requested a late check out NOT very late but around an hour til noon and was told that they were not not giving late check outs but I could pay $30 for late checkout. Ummm... That is the first time I had ever heard of that before AND I travel a lot. I just thought it was odd and somewhat of a cash grab That most people at the hotel were there for the marathon and would cut it close to checkout I could almost understand if it was a Fri or Sat but on a Sunday? Not thinking they needed to turn the rooms that fast.

$20 to self park was just a bit much you might be able to find cheaper rates across the street.

goneinsixtyseconds, thank you for staying and for taking the time to write. While we do not typically charge for a late check-out, at times we do in fact include a fee when several requests are made at the same time during higher occupancy times. We apologize for your disappointment and hope that you will return again in the future.

Had a great weekend in Cleveland, using this hotel as a base. Walking distance to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and some excellent restaurants. Very clean and comfortable with big, mushy comforters and great Aveda products in the bathroom. The dining in the hotel was pricey as hell, but very good. Gym is small but decently stocked. Would stay again.

We really enjoyed our weekend stay in Cleveland, and at the Renaissance. The location of this hotel is great. You are in the heart of downtown, near 6th Street restaurants and the entertainment district. The hotel is a real classic and has been retained in much of its original splendor. It is also a big plus, particularly in the winter, that you can walk directly to the new Horseshoe Casino, and the Tower City shops and a movie theatre, all without having to go outside. They have nice shops and a couple of coffee shops like Dunkin Donuts.

The room we had was very nice and they have done a good job updating the rooms without losing the charm of an older hotel. Bathroom was very bright, which is good. We had a room with two twin beds, and an area with a couch and TV, like a mini suite.

Loved the lobby bar, and the in-hotel restaurant has a good breakfast (make your own mini waffles). The bar and lobby area are very spacious and provide good views of the public square. It is also easy walking distance to a bunch of good restaurants. Also very near the baseball and basketball stadiums. You can also easily walk to the Rock and Roll Museum (in good weather).

They have Valet Parking at the hotel which comes in handy given the challenges getting a parking spot now that the casino is open, or if a game is going on at one of the stadiums.

The only complaint I would have was the Fitness "Center" on the 5th floor. It is more of a room, with very limited equipment and weights. We went on Saturday morning and there was no available equipment, but they only have a couple of treadmills, bikes, and elliptically. During the work week I can't imagine getting on the equipment. The facility is poor, and if I'd known how poor I would never consider this hotel if I was traveling on business. It is no longer a luxury to have a complete Fitness Center. This needs to be addressed or business will be lost.

It's a shame because this place has so many other things going for it. The front desk crew was mixed. We got got great service from some, and others that didn't follow up on things the way I'd expect.

So all in all a good hotel, with a few things that need to be addressed.

This hotel maybe one of the spots for weddings in downtown, Cleveland. This hotel maybe enjoying casino traffic, but it needs a rebirth. The valet parking is poor, understaffed and sets the stage for additional disappointments. Staffing and service maybe a managerial issue; the front desk at times looks like a line at Disney World.
We did not eat at the hotel. The staff never delivered the refrigerator we order and required 4 calls to get a day bed
The beds were ok.
For a downtown location is sight is no Reniassancs.

Bernie, thank you for visiting and for taking the time to write your review. We tremendously appreciate your feedback as this allows us to improve moving forward. On behalf of our entire team, we apologize for any disappointment regarding the valet and front desk issues. In addition, we definitely apologize should there have been any type of miscommunication regarding the fridge. We do offer mini refrigerators for guests based on availability. Without more information, we are unable to know what exactly happened with that situation however we definitely apologize for any problems. We hope that you will return in the future and enjoy a better experience. Thank you again.
