“Simply an outstanding visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2011

Have stayed here many times but this trip was special. My wife and I took our 15 year old daughter and her best friend into Cleveland for the day. We visited the rock hall before checking into the hotel. We arrived @ 2pm well before the 4pm checkin. Not only were our rooms ready, but they upgraded one of our rooms to a suite that was beautiful. The second room connected off the suite (and made the kids jealous!). Each and every person on the staff we encountered was outstanding and made us feel special.

The hotel itself is so elegant and historic. Don't get me wrong I love newer modern hotels but there is something really cool about the older places. All the marble and fountains and wood work is great. The hotel was very clean and tidy, the beds were really comfortable and the bathrooms were large and well stocked with all you could need.

Wonderful historic property in the heart of downtown Cleveland. Excellent for doing business with Sherwin-Williams or Key Bank as they are easy walks. Close to good restaurants and nightlife and short walk to the Cleveland Indians ballpark. Great staff with beautiful lobby!

Pros - great for business or events
Cons - rooms are a bit dated and could use some refreshing while still keeping the historic aspect.

Not good for families.

From the moment you walk into the lobby, you are treated with warmth, this is a wonderful hotel. The room was beautiful, well appointed and the beds incredibly comfortable. All of the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and warm. My friends' and I had dinner at a local restaurant and spent the night here. Stay here two or three times a year. Have tried other places, never again. I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else!

Room Tip: Always ask where your room is located, I try to ask for the Atrium view rooms, or the Public Square...

If you like grand dame hotels that don’t have a chip on their shoulder, you’ll really enjoy the Renaissance. When you get to that lobby (directly from the adjacent garage, or up one flight from the street) you’re greeted by a beautifully maintained interior in the tradition of great hotels of the early 20th century. The rooms follow the same theme, nicely updated. The connectivity in the rooms is 21st century.

The hotel was built 1918 as the Hotel Cleveland and was a Sheraton and a Stouffer’s before it became a Renaissance. At the front desk, you can get a booklet on its history. (Among other things you learn that it was one of the first hotels designed with a lobby above street level, a means of keeping the lobby free of non-guests. )

The guest rooms have been thoroughly updated and they’re nicely furnished, but the meeting rooms remain a prisoner of their architecture. The meeting room where my group was had handsome decorated walls, a huge chandelier and a very high ceiling, so it was beautiful to look at, but it had the boomy, echoing acoustics of a huge cave.

Management and friendly staff are clearly proud of the hotel’s history, and justifiably so. This is a great place to stay if you want to be in downtown Cleveland. It’s a classic, really. And if you’re in town for sports, it’s convenient to Jacobs Field, the Cleveland Browns Stadium and the Quicken Loans Arena. (A public-spirited nonprofit ought to be raising money to buy back the naming rights...)

Room Tip: If you're eligible for an upgrade, ask for a suite.

I stayed here when visiting Cleveland on business. The best things about the hotel are the comfortable bed, including nice linens, the overall ambiance of the lobby and common areas, and a decent bathroom, including counter space for toiletries and a good shower. The negative was the fact that it has old heaters with knobs that don't turn and not way to regulate heat / cold. Fortunately, I was there in November and was able to crack the windows to cool the hot room, and ordered a fan to drown out the city street noise. I wonder how whether it has functional AC in the summer. One other negative is no wireless internet service. Some of my colleagues had it in their rooms and it worked, others were supposed to have it and it did not work, and others didn't have it. I guess its a work in progress. It was acceptable for business travel and a pretty hotel, but probably not a place I'd choose for personal travel.

This is very much a grand, old hotel that's in need of a refresh. In full disclosure I only stayed there one night as part of a conference. Self parking was easy, especially for o downtown hotel. Valet was available too. Location is great. Walking distance to warehouse district restaurants and close to the inner belt freeways. Overall the room was disappointing. Small room, and no individual control over HVAC. Not much noise from halls or other room, but street noise was loud--better windows would help (I was on floor 8.). Front desk staff were nice, but didn't seem overly engaged.
That said, the conference staff and food was excellent. Great choices, lots of flavorful food. And the catering & event staff were very nice, very helpful. I saw them go out of their way several times to help colleagues. I would recommend the hotel for events based on the food and catering staff. As a hotel overall though, just an average , aging, downtown hotel.

My husband & I were just here for a Saturday night; had tickets to see a comedian at Hilarities on East Fourth and this was a great location. I had stayed here for a work meeting a year ago so new to expect an older hotel. We arrived around 3:15 p.m., and unlike a previous review, our room was ready and we were even upgraded to a suite. The hotel is older and could definitely use some renovations but we felt it was very clean.
Parking: you DO have options. You don't have to use their parking facilities. There is a lot across the street and the cost is $12 a night.
The hotel bar is nice and was quite crowded when we were leaving the hotel around 5:45 p.m.. It was obvious there was some type of business meeting/conference being held there, as we did encounter some idiot(s) in suits full of alcohol-induced bravado who seemed to think that everyone getting off of the elevator was there to see him. But that's to be expected when people are cut loose in a city away from their home. No issues with alcohol as we did go to the bar after returning from the comedy show. Liked the bar.
We walked to East Fourth (where Pickwick & Frolic/Hilarites is located) which offers many choices for entertainment & restaurants. I'd say it's about a 7 minute walk and we felt perfectly safe.
