“Pretty good, above-average for a downtown location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2011

Stayed there as part of a convention - which is what helps get it above average because the rate I got it for was considerably less than a typical midtown property. That put me in a better mood to start. If I'd paid full rate they'd get an average.

Most of the 'objections' I have are for downtown hotels in general, not for this one in particular, so I think you have to be fair and not pick on that.

Just a few odd annoyances that really would have been nice... like an in-room fridge, a publicly-accessible microwave somewhere. The only real negative I had to put up was that the entire square side of the hotel is closed and boarded up for renovation, and I received no warning from reservations about that. Couldn't even get in the building or find an entrance, had to drive around several blocks and made three attempts to find the alternate entrance. Parking was also not clearly indicated exactly where it was at - the website is inaccurate. That surprise was unnecessary.

Surprisingly noisy from hall noise, didn't expect that.

In-house restaurants a little pricey but very good. Lots of alternatives in walking distance. Walking distance to Rock & Roll hall of fame. Not too difficult for interstate access.

The location of this hotel is great. I just wish there was more useful information in the room about things it is convenient to. We wanted a king size bed but got put in a room with a queen. The room, bedding, and toiletries were nice, it was just a little small. It is on public transit and next to a mall that has an enclosed walkway to the arena (which is next to the stadiums) but there was no info on either of those things in the information in the room. Then again I guess most people look that stuff up on their smart phones these days.

The only thing that this hotel has in its favor is its historical significance and decor. If you are interested in historical, I would recommend just go and visit the lobby. I guess being close to other nice historical buildings is nice too. The rooms are small, dirty and poorly maintained. Elevators are old and tight and can be busy. The surrounding area is not safe - especially the public square. The adjoining mall has some nice stores and restaurants, but is otherwise a dump. We only stayed here because we had to. There must be better choices in Cleveland.

I can't remember a time that I've been so annoyed by a hotel that I wrote a review while staying at it. Yet, here I am sitting in my tiny room in September... freezing because "oh, we're not on heat yet". Really? Before I list the things that are bugging me, I will say that the staff here is quite friendly and the room does feel clean in spite of the fact that it's fairly dated. The work desk is quite large but has a glass top so a mouse pad is required (which I don't have since does anyone actually use them anymore?) I'm sitting on the chair that's so old there's very little spring left in the cushion; to the extreme that I have to sit on a pillow in order to be at a proper height to type (& I'm 5'6"). There is high speed internet but no wireless in the rooms. Is it 2011? My first night was brutal with their extra firm mattress and pancake pillow. Fortunately, I had sense enough to ask for a different pillow and it was better for night 2. The dated tub/shower has a straight bar and some sort of silky curtain that sticks to you the entire time your showering. Yuck. At least the shower head is decent with good pressure, but I have to stand in an inch of water since the tub drains slow. So, if you're unfortunate enough to have to stay in downtown Cleveland, I'd recommend checking other options.. if there are any better hotels in this ghost town.

This is an older “classic/grand” hotel. That usually means small rooms, small windows, and limited electrical service. And, this hotel pretty much lives up to those expectations. I had double-queen room #676 and it wasn’t so bad. However, one of the beds was shoved right up to the wall under the one small window in the room. Had to stand on the bed to open/close the drapes! Other than that, it was smallish but very comfortable. Others attending the conference complained about very, very small rooms.

Nice, new 37” HD TV’s. Too bad nothing was broadcast in HD – this made for fuzzy pictures. Wired internet connection in the room, for which I didn’t have to pay – apparently because I was there for a conference. However, the wire allowed for movement up to just 5 feet around the desk. No electrical hookup on the desk, had to crawl under the desk to plug/unplug. Nice…real nice. However, I did notice while I was down there that things were pretty clean.

The room was very, very clean. However, for some reason, the housekeeping staff insisted on using this strong, cloying air freshener…cough cough. No thermostat in the room, but you can adjust the 1950’s vintage in-the-wall air conditioner thingy – no heat adjustments, just AC.

Pleasant surprise: EXCELLENT water pressure, and they didn’t have one of those stupid flow-limiting shower heads…wonderful, wonderful shower, with instantly hot water. Bathroom was nice and big and bright. Woulda’ been nice to have a heat lamp, though.

Something weird about the bathroom, though: there was no switch-operated fan/vent – just the usual grate-in-the-wall. When I was in the bathroom, I could here adjacent rooms’ conversations coming through the vent. Heard the guy on his cellphone like he was standing outside my bathroom door. Kind of freaked me out the first time I heard it – thought someone was in my room!

The public areas near the lobby are very, very nice with free wireless wifi. Nice, but not necessarily anything with a big “WOW” factor. The bar off the lobby was very good, though – very good/attentive service.

Bottom line: a very nice hotel, better than some other “classic/grand” hotels I’ve stay at. Very clean, and extremely QUIET – on this trip the hotel was allegedly full, but I don’t think I heard anything other than the stuff coming through the bathroom vent. I would indeed stay here again, even at a cheapy weekend rate for a getaway with the Mrs. Plenty of wonderful restaurants within a few blocks.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a double-queen. The King rooms are smaller.

The measure of any greatness is the ability to perform well under pressure.... I Stayed in end of Aug for 3 days, arrived at the cleveland Renaissance on a week where they were hosting the National Championship for Bodybuilding comptetion, a pharmacuy/medical convention and a wedding. A time where easily this hotel's staff could have taken the cop out or used the "busy card" pass... but they the Renaissance staff rose to the occassion.

I will be up front and honest, Don't come here expecting the elegance that "Renaissance" might invoke in your thoughts. It's an old historical, classic hotel, Think of it as the Waldorf Astoria of cleveland. The Waldorf though still elegant and "updated to feel of the old and classic" will not compare nor be able to compete the with smooth sleekness of newer hotels.

The renaissance is as such, the rooms are old, the carpets probably still the same from decades ago, yes it might bring thoughts of the shining and you will see a lot of reviews about how the hotels age affects the value of the room itself. If you are staying here for a couples retreat, where you might spend a lot of time in the room to complete the datedness of furniture or facilities... then probably don't.

But if you are here for business or sightseeing where you wont be spending much time in the room to be bothered by its older feel, then do stay here. The rooms although old are adequately cleaned, housekeeping is diligent and attentive, rooms though small have a functional layout. Furniture though old, well serves its purpose.

Expect long wait times for checking in or if you have a question for the front desk, you have to take into consideration when staying in hotels like these the number of rooms and their occupancy, the staff can only speed up so much, without compromising service, I would rather wait and know that when its my turn I wont be rushed in service....they are very reliable and helpful. Once you do get the service it's worth the wait.

We had some special needs for special sheets as my boyfriend would be soaked in spray tan and once the request was made for the additional special sheets, they arrived at the room surprisingly fast for how busy they were. They always had at least 2 door men at the entrance to assist with the most simple thing as opening the door to giving directions or advise.

We wanted to request a late checkout which we knew was a long shot due to how busy they were and at first, we were denied, though given I did call around 4pm which is the busiest time for the front desk due to check-ins taking this into consideration, we asked a second time later on in the evening, which the friendly concierge was able to grant with ease.

The location is great as they are connected to the mall and the train station... a lot of ease of access.

I highly recommend staying here. Look past the aesthetics, i've stayed in neighboring hotels, check out my reviews. in which case I can fairly say... although "classic" may mean old furnishings and tapestries, in this case it also means.. "classic" service, bringing back the old times where doormen actually opened door and hospitality is felt from front desk to every single greeting heard from housecleaning and staff that you come across in the hallways, albeit "haunted" feeling or not. :)

In short....Renaissance will stand for old dated facilities but classic service will prevail!

Room Tip: Just ask for a room away from the housekeeping offices or quarters, as they can be a bit busy and lo...

this hotel is considered an historic site. with that in mind i did enjoy the beautiful lobby and bar. front desk staff was friendly. big bowl of apples sit on desk for your enjoyment. hotel bar opposite front desk was also beautiful. i do agree with other reviews that the long, dim hallways to guest rooms do remind you of the Shining! Very dated. The rooms are very small but certainly adequate for a single person traveling for business. i would like to see a room that would accompany a large group to see if they are able to provide enough space for 2-4 guests. bedding was wonderful. soft, lots of pillows. did not like that the toilet did not have a traditional flush handle but instead had the type you see in public restrooms where you use your foot to push handle. it was especially not easy since the handle was between toilet and tub. found message light flashing on phone first night and eventually staff reported that i owed for bottle of water (possibly) while i was staring at the bottle in front of me. i invited them to come see the bottle if they wanted but they said nevermind they would remove the charge??? weird. the rooms were very quiet. the air conditioner in the room was extremely old and in fact was nothing more than a fan. certainly didnt have any knobs that worked to change settings or temp. my room remained stuffy the entire time. i had 2 windows that could open slightly but the entire inside section of hotel opens to an atrium so no fresh air to be had. we did visit pool area and workout room. pool was really nice, workout area was way too small for size of hotel and had all machines being used with waiting line! not reasonable to wait and uncomfortable for those on machines as others stood staring at them. Location is wonderful. we walked to several bars/restaurants. no problem with valet parking, fast recovery of car in morning. navigator (new for consigere) provided directions and coupons. overall i would give this old place another try. i think some of the nostalgia was fun and acceptable.
