I treated my husband to dinner at Momocho in Ohio City. We had stopped there about a year earlier for drinks and guacamole. Unfortunately, it was really late that night and the restaurant was uber-crowded so Hubs wasn't impressed and didn't especially want to go back. I wanted to try again though. Since Hubs loves to watch chefs in action, and I ask a lot of questions, it was natural that we would sit at the chef's table which is really a countertop at the end of the galley kitchen upstairs.
It's not the most comfortable or private area to sit in (and if you have difficulty climbing stairs, forget it), but it is well worth it. We had an amazing dinner with crab guacamole, empanadas, the world's best sea scallops, and pumpkin puree for dessert. Hubs even raved about the coffee. I liked the hibiscus margarita (but it was on the sweet side.)
The chefs were our servers, entertainers and educators for the evening. We had a great time watching them prepare food and explain ingredients and techniques. They were knowledgeable and friendly.
Hubs already knows what he's going to order next time. In fact, he insisted on making another reservation before leaving and he says this will be a regular stop for us from now on.
Some caveats: The portions are decent but the prices are on the high side for Mexican. Momocho does have a parking lot and our large vehicle made it in easily, but it's a small lot with few spaces. The stairs are steep and narrow. The chef's table is in a high-traffic area with very little space for two people. Servers and fellow diners kept bumping my chair and the noise level is loud both upstairs and downstairs. In short, if you are looking for a quiet, romantic spot, this isn't it. If you are looking for excellent food and a fun atmosphere, you have to try Momocho!
