“Comfortable hostel - great addition for Cleveland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

We decided to stay at the Cleveland Hostel for 2 nights instead of a suburban hotel. The staff was great, very friendly. Although I only used the toaster and refrigerator, the kitchen appeared complete and well stocked to work in and the common area was quite comfortable. There was a large group of college students staying there and the common room seemed to work great for their brainstorming and work sessions. Our private room with a private full bath was large, very basic, but adequate. No elevator so if carrying bags up stairs is a problem, request a first floor room. We were in Cleveland to go to the Cleveland Clinic and it was a very easy drive of about 15 minutes. The free parking across the street from the hostel was a huge plus. The location by the Market was fantastic (recommend the bacon and cheese beer bread). I would highly recommend The Cleveland Hostel.

Heard about this place from a friend in Cleveland, and I am so glad I decided to stay here for 3 nights instead of a cold corporate hotel. First, the location is great for what I was looking for--beer gardens, bars, great food, cafes, easy access to the RTA station. The hostel itself is new clean and spacious, yet cozy and charming. I stayed in both a 4 bunk room as well as a single private room. The kitchen and common areas are quite large and well designed. I love the attention to detail anywhere from the chalkboard and posters of Cleveland pride in the rooms to the old school telephone booth in the lobby. Michelle and Mark were very friendly and down to earth people and made the stay even more enjoyable. I'm surprised that a European-style hostel is in Cleveland, but then again, maybe I shouldn't be. Check this place out, you won't regret it!

We staid in Cleveland for only one night in September and had a very nice time. Mark and the staff are very friendly, the view from the top of the buildung is great at night.

The facilities were excellent, since everything was pretty much brand new. I hope that they can maintain the facilities and people will be so kind and prudent to protect it as well.

I wish Mark and his staff all the best for the future, especially many friendly visitors.

Thanks again for having us!

The Cleveland Hostel is situated in a great neighborhood, just a stone's throw (if you are George Washington) from the West Side Market on Lorain and West 25th, an easy (and safe!) walk to bistros, brewpubs, several pastry cafés and coffeehouses, and the RTA train station if you don't have a car and want to see more of Cleveland. Newly renovated rooms (August 2012), very clean, very tasteful, and oh! so cozy! The common space (kitchen, dining tables, lounge) for socializing with other hostelers is quite copacetic, and conducive to meeting cool peeps as is the style of backpacking and youth hostels of Europe. The staff is fabulous, the feeling is cozy and chic; I mean it's Ohio City (a great neighborhood). I stayed one night in a private room, and one night in a room for 4 guys--no complaints. Where else can you find two breweries (Great Lakes and Market Garden) within a block or two, and a safe walk home (to the Hostel) after downing a few pints? Great pizza at the Bier Markt up the street, and more microbrews (mostly Belgian). Two pastry shops within a block or two, excellent baked goods and coffee-espresso-capuccino, etc. Lively urban folk everywhere! The weekend I stayed there was ~50 people from New York City (mostly students) at the Hostel. Very fun!

I stayed in a shared room for 3 nights, and was completely satisfied with the value. Excellent location: A quick train ride from the airport, it's just 2 blocks from the RTA (train) and lots of buses pass right in front.. Down the block from the West Side Market, which aside from being a beautiful landmark, is a great place to get a taste for local food and to stock up on fruits... and plenty of bars & restaurants (ranging from fast food to pricey) along the same strip. The dollar store across the street sells locks for your locker.. The actual facilities were better than I expected-- a very large common area (with wi-fi) allows for privacy or socializing... large shared kitchen with plenty of pots/pans/dishes.. and there's even laundry facilities and a roof deck with an amazing view! The bedroom was clean, and people were friendly--as is usually my experience in hostels. The photos they have on their site are good representations, so I'm not posting my own.

My complaints: The first night they blasted the heat (this coming from someone who is always cold) which left an odd smell lingering (this coming from a very sensitive nose, since no one else seemed bothered). Also, my 4-person bedroom had only one exit and a window which is permanently sealed-- which is worrisome, though they do have a sprinkler system. All of that said, I didn't make any complaints, but the friendly staff would probably be responsive to anyone's concerns. This place is definitely worth the $27/night I paid and then some.

Hi, thank you for staying at The Cleveland Hostel. I am glad you enjoyed your experience. We are a very new hostel only being open a couple months. The interior of the building was completely rebuilt specifically for the hostel and complies will all codes. As we are new we are still working some kinks out. Thanks again for staying with us and for the great review, we hope to see you again soon!
