“InterContinental HOTEL (not suites!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2011

My husband and I stayed a night here even though we currently live in Cleveland. We needed a romantic night out. The rooms were so nice- modern (without being too modern) and clean. The restaurant was great, too. The service was amazing. The down side is that they make you pay for parking, but it's kinda nice that it's valet. If you need to come here for the Cleveland Clinic, I would totally recommend it because it's RIGHT THERE. If you are looking to stay here for the city, it's a bit far from downtown. I've heard that the InterContinental SUITES are not as nice, so some people may have accidentally reviewed the wrong one.

My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and we decided to stay at the ICon for the night. We had stayed here in the past and enjoyed ourselves. This was far from the case this time. What was supposed to be a nice night turned into a nightmare.

Check-in went smoothly and we went into our first room. We were given a handicap accessible room right next to the elevator that we did not care to be in. We asked for a non-handicap accessible room away from the elevator and the front desk person switched our room with no problem. We go to our next room and unfortunately it was still next to an elevator. Not a big deal though. The trouble began when my wife checked the bed for bed bugs (we do this at every hotel) only to find several strands of hair on the sheets. There were several different hair types too, so who knows if the sheets were even changed from the previous guests! We call the front desk and request a manager to come and take a look. No one comes up and 15 minutes later we have to call down again. The front desk manager comes up with another employee and inspects the bed. The manager offers to switch our room. We have dinner reservations, so they offer to move our luggage to the new room. We go to dinner thinking that everything will be fine when we return.

We come back and they move us to a junior suite and give us champagne. Okay, everything should be great now, right? WRONG! We inspect the bed and again there are several different strands of hair in the bed. Are you serious?!! The manager comes up again, this time with the housekeeping manager. We show her the hair and neither one of them say anything for a moment. The manager get defensive and proceeds to say that they changed the sheets and three people inspected the bed so she doesn't know how it got there. Well it certainly didn't come from us considering the fact that we just got in the room and the hair type didn't match either one of us. She reluctantly offers to change the sheets, but the housekeeping manager interjects saying she doesn't want to change them if this is going to be an on-going problem. It wouldn't be an on-going problem if you actually cleaned your sheets. At this point my wife and I are thoroughly disgusted and want to leave. Both managers do not even apologize and leave the room. We packed up our stuff and left as quickly as we could.

My advice is to stay as far away from this dirty hotel. However, if you like hair from someone else's body in your bed, this is the place for you. Thanks ICon for ruining what was supposed to be a special night for us!

Upon arrival at the hotel, we felt un-welcome.
When I made my hotel reservation, I requested for a refrigerator in my room and was told that there would be an additional fee, I said ok. The day before arrival, I called to verify that the request was noted on my reservation and it was. Upon my arrival, I asked the front desk clerk if there was a refrigerator in my room, she didn’t know. When we checked into the room there was no refrigerator and was told they all had been distributed out. Now, the front desk clerk should have advised me of this. Also, we notice there was no duvet cover on bed and brought it to the attention of the cleaning lady. She told me that the hotel were out of them. The next day, I spoke to another house cleaning lady, who went above and beyond her duties to find us one.
Lastly, we were not given a map of the campus or local restaurants in the downtown area. As least the staff over at Intercontinental Suites Hotel the staff was more helpful in providing us with a map of the campus and the local restaurants in the downtown area. Also, she explained everything that Intercontinental Hotel and Suite Hotel had to offer, which should have been explained to us upon check in.

Do
I do like that it is connected to Cleveland clinic.

The room was very clean and comfortable and the bathroom was large and luxurious. The checking-in process could have been more welcoming, but checking-out was a pleasant enough experience.

The main disappointment was the restaurant, Table 45. Whilst my meal was fairly good, my husband's meal was terrible. The sweet and sour sauce in his first course was too sour and more like a watery soup than a sauce. The fish in his second course was overcooked, the salsa was too sharp and completely obliterated any taste from the fish or asparagus and the fact that it was served in a bowl made it look unappetizing. The service was ok, although we realise that it was busy, but the seating arrangements could have been better. My husband was sat in front of a table of six and unfortunately, the guest behind him sat with his chair some distance from the table and every time someone walked between the two, they had to squeeze through, knocking my husband's chair each time.

We had expected some noise at night, particularly as it was New Year's Eve, but we didn't enjoy being woken up around 2.30am by a smoke alarm going off in a neighbouring room. What made it so irritating was the way in which it was handled. The hotel staff should have kept their voices down when addressing the guests in the room from the corridor and should have turned off the alarm sooner rather than having a lengthy discussion about it first.

We decided to skip breakfast based on the previous night's culinary experience.

A shame about the food, but the room was great. We would recommend staying here, but just don't bother with the restaurant.

Dear dtcoulton,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience with our hotel. We are pleased to learn you enjoyed your accommodations!

We regret your dining experience on New Year’s Eve was disappointing and the busyness of the evening impacted your comfort. We have shared your comments on the menu items with our Chef and will use your feedback in our future menu developments.

Once again, thank you for your time; we hope to see you in our hotels again in the near future.

Sincerely,

We have stayed here many times when coming to Cleveland for a weekend away. One warning: the hotel is located in the middle of and connected to Cleveland Clinic and is not in a part of town where you would want to walk around outside. As long as you are okay with that, the inside of the hotel is beautiful and rooms are tastefully decorated, spacious and VERY comfortable. Our stays are always on weekends and this trip was not different. Due to its association with the Clinic, weekends are usually VERY quiet and low key.
Desk staff was attentive and efficient and there is a fleet of valet parking people greeting you at the door. You don't have to use valet parking, though. On this trip, as well as a previous trip, we asked the hotel to arrange for a driver to take us to dinner across town ($10 in a town car). The driver gave us his card and we called when we were finished. All very convenient. There is a well known restaurant in the hotel, too, but we needed to be elsewhere.
Our only problem on this stay was glassware left in the hall outside of rooms. Not sure why they were there even after the maids came by, but a mention to the concierge on our way out had them all gone when we returned.

This hotel is wonderful - attached to the Cleveland Clinic - and has the most accommodating staff. Anntoinette on the concierge level is an absolute doll - makes you feel warm and welcomed, and watching the hugs she receives from returning guests, she is genuine.
