“Incredibly warm homey feeling while dining on homemade delights”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2012

This is my first experience with Turkish food and I'm HOOKED! The converted house that this restaurant is located in, gives it an incredibly warm homey feeling while dining on homemade delights. The mixed appetizer platter is an absolute must every time we go. I would also highly recommend the Iskender and Doner Kebab. The wait staff here is very friendly and helpful if you have any questions regarding the menu. GET A RESERVATION, because this secret of how good this food is got out!

“Good Turkish food in historic Tremont neighborhood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2011

I suppose that people visit Cleveland for a lot of reasons. Many of these people end up staying around downtown Cleveland, where the museums and meeting hotels are located. This can get boring, especially for travelers looking for something a bit more local and historic. Fortunately the Tremont neighborhood is a short cab ride away, where you can find a lot of old Cleveland buildings, many of which have been retrofitted into restaurants and shops. It's a great place to see some of the best of what Cleveland has to offer today, while paying tribute to the city's history.

There are a lot of well-regarded restaurants and bars that have sprung up in the Tremont revival, but one of the more interesting ethnic options is Grill Istanbul, whose Turkish chef pulls together a variety of dishes from various regions in Turkey. In general, there are few surprises at Grill Istanbul if you know Turkish food. This isn't fusion or experimental food. Adana, and various kinds of kebap (including Iskender) are offered both with and without yogurt. There is a wide selection of cold appetizers, such as ezme, cacik, and kisir that will satisfy anyone looking to try a mixture of small plate items. And since many items that people think are Greek or generic Mediterranean food are actually Turkish dishes (e.g. dolma), you can find something familiar to eat even if you are not up to speed on Turkish cuisine. But if you're willing to try Turkish food (and you should be!) I highly recommend either the adana with yogurt or the kofte kebap for the carnivores. Vegetarians will find plenty to eat as well, including sigara borek, grilled vegetable kebap, red lentil soup, and the amazing okra stew, all of which are filling and delicious plates, not just entrees with the meat taken out.

The servers at Grill Istanbul are friendly and helpful. One of the most comforting things about this place is that wait staff know the food very well and can make a variety of recommendations (and even suggest modifications) for those with various kinds of food allergies. While this is increasingly expected in American restaurants, it is nice that this restaurant has already thought through the menu and prepared the staff accordingly. Unfortunately, through no fault of their own, they sometimes have to apologize for items that are not available. The most obvious of these is raki, which is traditional Turkish liqueur that holds an unclear position under Ohio law and is therefore hard to stock. Sometimes they have it, sometimes they don't. So don't be insulted if they offer you ouzo instead. But if they have raki, ask to mix it yourself, drop in some ice, and sip your raki while you enjoy some really good Turkish food in Tremont.
