“Wonderfully charming, historic yet modern, small hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2009

What a gem! The Glidden House was owned by an heir to the Glidden Paint Company fortune. The mansion has beautifully preserved hand-carved woodwork and intricate plaster ceilings, yet also has a modern design to it. The lobby bar is small and charming. The bartender was both friendly and helpful. Felt like he was an old friend. The room was beautifully decorated and comfortable. The complimentary Continental breakfast was large and delicious. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Free on-site parking. It is situated on the campus of Case Western Reserve University which was very convenient for me. Located near so many points of interests and restaurants.

I called the Glidden House to book our rehearsal dinner a year prior to our date. The gentleman who books events like weddings/rehearsal dinners spent about 20 minutes degrading other fine dining establishments in Cleveland. He insinuated that places like the Ritz were "below" the Glidden House in the most insulting way. Sir, the Ritz beats out your price by almost half. I believe if you're any good, you don't have to toot your own horn. It just made you look tacky.

Stayed in a suite with my wife. Room standard as such is not bad although there is nowhere to hang any items in the bathroom (no hooks AT ALL) and no mirrors outside of bathroom (but TWO 42" LG TV's, one per person I guess). Found one bathrobe in the room, needed another. Pressed "Guest Services" on the phone. After 2 minutes of long beeps got answering machine with "Please leave your name and number and we will call you back"..... Didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Went down to the reception and asked the girl there for a second bathrobe. She said they allocated one bathrobe per room and that was it.... Laughed my guts out. Tried to get to the manager but he was not there. So.. the place can be .. um...strange. The bar service was great though, and the bartender Ed was absolute top notch and very helpful, may thanx. The room service is provided by a hellhole next door called Sergio's. You can also go there for dinner if you like extreme sports. My advice though is: avoid at all costs, the place is a culinary nightmare. The "French" Albatros two minutes away is a much better bet, but book early. Overall a varied experience but then we are not exactly in Bangkok here.

My hosts booked me at the Glidden House, and overall it's a great hotel. However, I did find it just a tad disappointing after perusing their website, which emphasizes the historic character and uniqueness. It almost sounds more like a big B&B from the name. They do serve a sumptuous and elegant breakfast, and much of the building is historic, but the main section is pretty much a nice, but standard, hotel. The rooms are comfortable, but just like those in the nicer chain hotels. The service was inconsistent. The doorman just stared at me as I opened the door myself and rolled in my own luggage, but the bartender was friendly (I was the only customer that evening). The location is perfect for the elegant downtown spots and museums, as well as the university.

A top quality small hotel where you can park your car for free and walk one block to an art gallery. historical museum, botanical garden with 18,000 sq. ft. of greenhouse, and a natural history musem. James (consierge) was terriffic in supplying ideas. Behind the hotel is a pub (Broken Spider) with live music, and behind it is a French restaruant.
A short drive away is President Garfield's Memorial and the Wade Chapel which has an amazing stained glass window and mosaic murals.
The breakfast was served in the Glidden's original dining room.
This is a great place for a mini-holiday!

We stayed two nights at the Glidden and were fortunate enough to be in a room in the original part of the house right above the front door which meant that the room was unusual -interestingly so- in shape. Bathroom was huge and well appointed with a glorious shower. Breakfast, in the original conservatory and dining room, offered every reasonable choice. The concierge helped us to book a table at an excellent restaurant. Shuttle around University Circle area stops right outside the hotel and makes a trip into downtown on RTA perfectly feasible and convenient. While not wishing to be silly, we found that providing thirteen assorted pillows and cushions on the bed was excessive. There are excellent restaurants fifteen minutes walk away in Little Italy; Sergio's next door is overpriced, overhyped and distinctly underwhelming.

I went to school at Case Western, so I was very excited to finally stay at the Glidden House. Unfortunately, the experience turned into a nightmare. They put us in a room next to a large white tent, and my immediate thought was that they had just had a wedding there the night before. I was wrong. The wedding was that night. When the music started, I spoke to the front desk because it was extremely loud, and they assured me that the music would stop around 10 pm. At 10:30 pm, I called the desk again and the front desk was again unhelpful. This time, they put me in contact with the wedding coordinator, who apologized, but promised it would absolutely end at 11:00 pm. At 11:30 pm, I called the front desk yet again, and this time, they were finally able to shut down the music. I had so many problems with this incident - they never should have put us in a room next to the tent. They should have at least warned us that the wedding was going to happen that night, and given us the choice of going to another hotel. They ABSOLUTELY have shut down the music at 10:00 pm as they had originally promised. Traveling with two young children is hard enough, but it was excruciating with the horrible singer going on and on until 11:30 at night. The staff reaction to my complaint was essentially a shoulder shrug. The next morning, they were unwilling to do anything for us. I expected far more from the Glidden House.
