“a great surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2012

This was my first and only day in Cleveland and the stay at Glidden made this a great experience. I was a bit fearful of Cleveland and thought it would not be a very pleasant place to be, but I was wrong and Glidden house helped me change my attitude. The purpose of the trip was a college visit to Case Western. The short stay in this charming hotel added a great deal to our visit Fortunately, the weather was perfect and we were very comfortable walking around the campus and reaching the main university circle street. We actually had a fast take out from the Dennys?/ hamburger place just across 2 parking lots from Glidden House. This was a very small takeout place almost hidden away, but the salad and burgers were very good.We had one of the larger rooms/suites, as that was the only one available, thus the rate was a bit higher. Breakfast included with the room was great and in a beautiful room.

This trip was the second time we have stayed at The Glidden House and we look forward to many future visits. The hotel is perfectly located for walking to the many cultural attractions in the University Circle area or for visiting Case Western University. The hotel itself is an old mansion which is impeccibly decorated in the public areas of the first floor. It offers suites on the upper floors of the mansion, and rooms in a more modern addition attached to the back of the mansion. The rooms are very clean and nicely decorated with good bathroom amenities. Breakfast was amazing with omelets and waffles offered on different days, breakfast meat, excellent baked goods, cereals, oatmeal, and an excellent fruit selection of both fresh and dried fruits. One person at the front desk seemed to have a less-than positive attitude, but most of the desk personnel were very friendly and helpful. There is a free parking lot available and street parking nearby. There is a restaurant, Sergio's, adjacent to the hotel, but we did not have the opportunity to try it.

We stayed at Glidden House while visiting Case Western Reserve University and it was the perfect location for that visit but also for so much more! We walked to Little Italy, and of course all the museums (Cleveland Art Museum, Museum of Natural History, Botanical Gardens) are right at your doorstep. There is more that we didn't even have time for so we hope to go back!
Breakfasts were good and while we never waited for a table, some did. And we give high praise to the coffee! And, some might consider the rooms a little small (especially compared to national chain brand hotels) but it's in keeping with boutique hotels in cities.

Stayed here for the second year for 9 and 10 days at a stretch, Charming hotel, charming staff and an absolutely perfect location if you want to be within walking distance to most of Cleveland's cultural attractions. Breakfast is included in the room rate and is good although don't arrive in the last half hour- chances are there's nothing much left. Otherwise blueberries, croissants, crumpets, pastries, eggs, waffles, bacon - Yum.
I subtracted a star because one night we had a baby next door who screamed at the top of his or her lungs (which appeared super-humanly powerful) for what seemed like most of the night. We realized that , as on a plane, babies have to be somewhere and while we hardly slept a wink we were pretty pragmatic about the situation at the time. But then we discovered that the hotel was not at all full that night (meaing the family could have been isolated from other guests) and resentment set in not least because we were told that a) a hotel policy involving inquiry as to whether guests have children with them is discriminatory and b) if the family wanted a kingsize bed (making them certain candidates as our next-door neighbours) and they were refused such an arrangement that too was discriminatory. I must say we didn't quite get that. We felt that we were discriminated against by being presumably the only people in the hotel apart from the poor baby's parents (hopefully!) who didn't get a wink of sleep. We felt we were discriminated against by NOT being ofered an alternative sleeping arrangement for ourselves that night. We would have chosen a quiet night (albeit in twin beds which were certainly available) above anything. The $50 discount we were given to acknowledge our inconvenience went someway towards diluting our chagrin but unfortunately did not have the same effect on my sleep-deprived migraine which hung around for days afterwards.
Tip: Especially if you are a performer with the orchestra or if you are an academic requiring a reasonable night's sleep, make enquiries as to who your neighbours are (because you won't be told) to ensure that you are in a state to function appropriately the day.

My husband surprised me with a night at The Glidden house, in one of the suites in the original part of the mansion, the William Joy Glidden suite. I was suitably impressed by the comforts in our little home away from home for the evening. Keurig coffee makers (much easier than those stupid little coffeemakers - and tidier). The decor was lovely and the staff wonderful. Ed, at the bar on Saturday was delightful to talk to and very knowledgeable. The breakfast the next morning was yummy. Liked that when we asked for a cab, we actually got a car service to take us to our destination at the same cost as a cab and lots nicer,

Only issues I had were that the floor heat in the bathroom either did not work or we did not know the magic to make it do so. Also in the bathroom - the shower set up was tricky - had the rain shower and a regular showerhead - but you actually had to get in to turn them on - got a lovely blast of cold from both before I could get the setting correct - a little card posted to instruct on the uses of the floor heat and shower would be helpful.

Room Tip: For charm and character - ask for a suite in the older section.

We were looking for a comfortable hotel near Serverance Hall to be able to walk to and from a Friday evening concert. We arrived early enough to walk over to the Cleveland Museum of Art for a good visit. There are other attractions nearby as well. The room was very nice, the front of the hotel a good mix of original and updated features, and the breakfast fine. The restaurtant next door was also a nice touch for those of us who like to park the car and leave it. Would definitely stay again.

Dear Mike_Edina,
We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay at the Glidden House. It's nice that you had time to explore what University Circle has to offer, including Severance Hall and the Museum of Art. Perhaps on your next visit, you will have time to explore the Botanical Gardens and the Western Resserve Historical Society. Thank you for taking the time to write a review.
