“Fantastic view - terrible meal”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

Whilst visiting Port Elliot in Jan 2013 we had fish and chips for dinner at "The Flying Fish Cafe". As we were not dressed appropriately we ate out on the deck, instead of in the restaurant, whilst admiring the view.
We both had the "signature cone of coopers sparkling ale battered fish and chips",we were extremely disappointed with the meal as it was dripping with oil and were unable to eat it. The waitress came and asked if all was well, I don't usually complain but as she asked I expressed how we felt - her reply was "well you should have asked for it to be grilled!!!"...Never again...

“Why pay - stay at the take-away.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

We were not sure about the restaurant, hearing about it's over-priced reputation made us wary about visiting. We obviously did visit, and we dined in the take-away section, rather than the restaurant. Everything was great and good value, and when we looked at the dining menu (same? if not, very similar) there was the price issue. So, don't be put off by the price-gripes if you want good fish N' chips at a wonderful location. The BYO charge was steep, but that's my problem.

“Great coffee, great view, great atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

The casual atmosphere and great coffee make this a perfect place to enjoy the beach front. We relaxed with a coffee whilst the kids swam right in front of us. What more can you want

“Disappointing- great location, awful food. Avoid!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013 via mobile

This used to be a nice place but in the last eighteen months its gone from bad to worse. The menu is limited and dated, the food is unimaginative, stodgy, unappetising. The quality of produce is questionable - my fish stank- and the service is patchy!! All this at a premium price!!
I've eaten here on many occasions over the last ten years but recent experience has been extremely disappointing and I will not be going again until there is a change of ownership/chef/ menu!!

“Very disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

I went to the Flying Fish with a group of friends for lunch as it had a great reputation and I had not been for about two years. Very disappointed in the quality of the food and the service. The entree was very good but it went rapidly downhill from there. I ordered the chickpea salad which had a lot of rocket and very little else, but the most disappointing part was that it was dripping in oil, so much in fact that the rocket had started to wilt and turn black. There were problems with the other mains as well. In addition, we had to wait a long time for the food and while we would have been happy to order more drinks, no one came to take any orders, and when we did manage to get someone's attention, they took the order, then no drinks ever appeared. Didn't even try to order any desert - by this time it was so late in the day, we left and had desert elsewhere.
