Description: With Head Chef, Dioni Flanagan, at the helm, award-winning 'The Kitchen Door' offers two distinct dining experiences. Regional, seasonal and affordable underpin both formal dining in 'Gedney Room' or a casual 'Drew's Verandah' offer. Both spaces overlook the post and rail fences of the Suffolk sheep paddocks, a vista not available from any CBD eatery. 'The Kitchen Door' Restaurant was awarded the National Restaurant & Catering Awards title of "Best Restaurant in a Winery" in 2007 and again in 2013 as well as the South Australian title in 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

“Great setting, child friendly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012 via mobile

Limited menu only two choices... The steak sandwich was lovely though. Enjoyed it. Our order was forgotten which they did apologise for and offered two bottles of complementary wine. I was impressed they acknowledged our situation. The bad thing is they forgot twice! We waited 2 hours for our steak sandwiches, what made it worse instead of giving us the new few that were ready they kept serving all the other tables first. One table were on their second meals. They avoided eye contact with us. I'd go back to purchase wine and visit but maybe not to eat. I still recommend it though as I'm sure that doesn't happen everyday.

Thanks - something for us to work on - a bad hair day. I am so glad the team at Penny's Hill & Mr Riggs Cellars realised the problem and offered a quick solution - wine is always a great way to put a smile on a face. We would love to have you back soon to eat at The Kitchen Door Restaurant and hopefully we can show off our full menu (rather than just the Cellar Door grazing options).

“No Monday blues”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012

We dropped in after booking that Monday morning to be given a friendly welcome and first rate food and service. Lovely setting and interesting menu choices which were well described and prepared. As there were only 2 couples it was quiet which took away from the atmospere a little bit as we like that buzz that comes from a busy well run place. Couldn't fault otherwise and would return again. I would like to see if the standards can be maintained with a full house.

“A little gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

Everything happens for a reason.... this was the third winery we tried being unsuccessful at the other two and it was so worth it. Wow! Staff were very friendly and accommodating on a busy Saturday lunchtime and fit us in. What a picturesque view including the quintessential farm fencing, containing sheep and a little black lamb, green everywhere after the recent rain and the backdrop of gum tress and vines. Gorgeous wines and fabulous food (the mushrooms were amazing, as was the tuna risotto and the lemon tart - yum!), topped off by the relaxed atmosphere. A great location, will definitely return.

“A must visit - Winner SA Restaurant and Catering Awards "Best Restaurant in a Winery"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

Wow this restaurant located in McLaren Vale and was always one of those "must" visits. Dont let it be yours - just do it. Attention to detail is a major factor along with great service by staff who are very attentive. Tasting Menu is of a great quality for a very reasonable price. We experienced the amazing Tasting Menu: Brandade - salt cod brandade, hand milked & smoked caviar, fried silver fish and kipfler crisps served with 2012 Mr Riggs Watervale Riesling. Followed by Slow Roasted Wild Mushrooms, duck egg, winter herbs, Sicilian green olive brioche with 2011 Penny's Hill "The Handshake" Chardonnay. Next Tuna Risotto, ferron risotto, olive oil poached A blue fin Tuna with anchovy crumble, fennel and peas with a 2009 Penny Hill "The Experiment" Grenache. Final course - European Goose, harricot beans, chicory, Hamlets speck and baby beets served with 2009 Mr Riggs "Piebald" Shiraz Viognier. 3 complimentary courses were served along with this lovely meal. Attention to detail to name a few which I noted was decanting the red wine prior to serving plus home made bread rolls which were amazing and very rare in this day of food service. Looking forward to further visits to this wonderful fine establishment.

PS After many attempts and cant understand why, I tried to upload a photo of the two
Tams . The second Tam I had a photo of was of the Restaurant Manager/Functions Manager.

“Not enough time for the 21/2 hour degustation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2012

Very nice people, quaint venue but the kitchen was very very slow. Just a bar burger and a meze plate.
Advice to Penny's kitchen be bolder with your bar food, very good ingredients but sum was less then the parts same for the plate.
We would visit again, maybe.

Thank you for your feedback.
I would just like to clarify that our restaurant 'The Kitchen Door' and our Cellar Door serve completely different menu's and that a dining experience in the cellar door can not be reflective of a 'Kitchen Door' experience.
