5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2006

I stayed at On The Wallaby as part of an On The Wallaby tour from Cairns. The tour was really good (waterfalls, volcanic lakes, swimming, canoeing, nature spotting), and the hostel was great. Inside it has the look of a ski lodge, and is comfortable, and friendly. I stayed in a six share dorm, but there are also double rooms, which look comfortable, and it is possible to camp in the garden. The toilets and showers were clean. I enjoyed a reasonably priced BBQ (with vegetarian option) at the hostel, on my first night, and went into the village of Yungaburra to a Swiss restaurant on my second night.

It's possible to book onto most of the activities, without being on a tour, but obviously you would then need transport to get yourself to the lodge. I can particularly recommend the canoeing if you are a beginner. They are big, plastic and very stable!

The Atherton Tablelands are much less humid than Cairns, and very well recovered from the cyclone. The area is very beautiful.

Yungaburra has some nice shops. I'd recommend a visit to the Tropical Chalet (think that was the name), next to the Swiss restaurant. It has lovely woodwork upstairs, and also some very strange giant fairy statues on display.

Staying at On The Wallaby felt like a holiday from my holiday, and I am now ready to enjoy the rest of my travels.

  • Liked — Clean, comfortable, and friendly
  • Disliked — Slightly too soft mattresses (see, I'm having to try hard to find anything!)
  • Tips/Secrets — Go platypus spotting - they are tiny and cute!
