“Atmospheric, Cinematic and Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2013

I stayed at the North Gregory Hotel during the weekend of the launch of Mystery Road a crime thriller western by the talented Ivan Sen. The Hotel is right next door to the cinema Theatre Royal and is highly atmospheric. The after party was held in the tropical beer garden out the back. The North Gregory is historic hotel and its architectural style is astounding - that rare example of delicate 50s Australian interpretation of late art nouveau mixed with American sci-fi 50s fantasy but all done really tastefully. The grand hall, stairwell and dining room in particular capture the period perfectly. The Hotel is friendly and the staff are terrific - nothing is too difficult and there is genuine country hospitality. They are knowledgeable about the area and bar is a great place to meet locals. its a bit of a social hub. The food was surprisingly good. Hotel layout works well and it reminded me of a grant hotel from the past and it is very cinematic. Good place to stay and there are heaps of things to do in and around Winton. recommended.

Room Tip: i stayed in a balcony room that faced onto the street providing a good vantage point to watch the to...

Loved the décor of this 50s/60s retro style hotel with very hospitable new hosts. We were made very welcome, stayed in a recently refurbished room with continental breakfast included which was a nice extra. Very good food with both locals and guests eating in restaurant - always a good sign. Winton is worth the visit for the Age of Dinosaur museum, the Stampede south of Winton and waltzing Matilda museum. Great weekend break.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back but Winton is quiet so front or back would be good location.

In Winton you really are in the outback and so stumbling across a hotel such as the North Gregory comes as something of a surprise. The hotel obviously has a proud history and the grand entrance and fresh and funky 1950s themed rooms were fun and very different. We found the staff friendly and the food excellent. The place had a good time atmosphere when we were there, and we would certainly stay there again.

To find such fine food and comfy accommodation this far west is rare indeed. A lovely town full of heritage and character and this hotel puts you right in the middle of it. Always fun people running the place too.

Room Tip: The Lyndon Johnson room is top.

“Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong, under the shade of a Coolibah tree, and he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boil, you’ll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.”

If you’re Australian you’ll recognise this phrase as part of Australia’s unofficial National Anthem by Banjo Patterson.

There’s a time and place for all beginnings, and the North Gregory Hotel was the place where Banjo Patterson himself first performed the infamous Waltzing Matilda in 1895. The small town of Winton is often said to be the gateway to the real Australia and that is exactly how you feel when you walk into the North Gregory hotel.

Upon arrival, you feel as if you have entered a time warp to the 1950’s. Having burnt down three times, the North Gregory is a survivor. After the most recent fire in 1946, the council began to rebuild the hotel in 1952 and finished by 1955. It’s this 50’s era that makes the hotel’s decor so intriguing. You get the sense that you have been zapped into a 1950’s sitcom with period lights and retro furniture. A green and white colour pallet covers the building and each room has red velvet curtains keeping to the theme.

Throughout the hotel the walls come to life and whisper the many stories and legends of their time. And if talking walls isn’t enough, you are greeted by a true blue Aussie Occa, dressed in blue King Gee’s, singlet, work boots and an akubra. His cheerful Aussie attitude is infectious and leaves you feeling as if you have been part of the Winton community for eons.

But what is an authentic Aussie experience without some authentic Aussie tucker? A meal which should not be missed is the Outback Char Grill. You can taste the region itself when you sink your teeth into local meats and seafood from the golf. To help cement the time warp feeling from Banjo to retro, the Aussie chefs cook your meal on Gidgee wood charcoal which has been dated to be over 100 years old.

Foody Claudia Vogel said when she ate the food, she knew she was in the outback.
“It just melts in your mouth,” she said.

But the outback comes with a catch; the stifling heat in summer. Although the rooms are air conditioned, modern technology can’t compete with Mother Nature. So if you decide to visit during the summer months, be prepared to sweat.

Don’t let the whether scare you away. For the birthplace of the legend of the jolly swagman should not be neglected. So take a historic holiday and come Waltzing Matilda your way down to the North Gregory Hotel.

Went for afternoon drinks Friday afternoon at the North Gregory and pleasantly surprised to see beautiful fresh prawns and deep fried squid on offer to patrons. Keep this up yo the new Managers at the North Gregory and we had dinner there last night and it was lovely thank you.
