“Looked good but up close it was fairly dingy”

I agree with the first review in that on arrival the outside was very disappointing and we couldn't even find the number of the apartment block on the building and were hoping that the inside was going to be a big improvement on the outside

We had booked for 4 nights but we left after only one night because the apartment was in very bad condition and the 2nd bedroom had a very bad damp problem that made sleeping impossible almost.

I expected that the apartment would have been cleaned to some standard and found the follow issues:

1. On arrival I had to pull the curtain down off the table and it was covered in bugs and hadn't been wiped for some time.
2. In the second bedroom the pillows were all covered in bugs and there was a very bad damp smell/problem which got worse after being closed up at night
3. The kitchen was grubby and places like down beside the fridge had months if not years of dirt/grease build up.
4. The shower was in very bad condition with a badly broken screen.
5. There were no towels on our arrival and I suspest this was because the "cleaners" hadn't been in to "clean" they did prompty drop off the towels when I called them though
6. The couch also had a damp smell and was badly badly stained as were the chairs at the dining room table.

For only $5 a night more we got a 5 star apartment in Trinty Beach - if you are going to stay within the competitive holiday rental market I would suggest they either put prices down or fix the existing problems before spending money on extra's like soft furnishings which in the photo's on the website make the apartment look quite clean and modern.

I did contact the owner after the first night and tried to meet them half way and pay for 2 nights instead of the 4 even though we stayed only one and was told to email them. I recieved an email back in reply basically telling us we were wrong and that we left because it was raining - very bad customer service and very rude email back from owners. '

Basically the place felt like it had been a permanent rental and they had done a spot clean and rented it out as a holiday rental.

Also they advertise it as Mission Beach and its actually Wongaling and in the middle of nowwhere you would need to drive to the GOOD restaurants at Mission Beach for food.

On booking, the owner was really lovely to deal with and extremely helpful, so I can't fault the service on booking.

The website photos do a good job of misrepresenting the apartments, as we were disappointed with what we found on closer inspection. We thought that the price seemed reasonable for such a modern looking place (photos gave that impression) but when we arrived we saw why. We'd previously stayed at 2 other great places in Port Douglas and Palm Cove (one we paid less for and one we paid a tiny bit more for) and these really showed up the Rainforest Apartments.

Our apartment (I think apartment 2) was set in a dingey looking building. We hoped that the inside had been done up and would look better but we were unfortunately disappointed. On arrival, the first thing we noticed was the yucky looking balcony area at the entrance. It just needs a really good refurb with a nice table and chairs. The BBQ was also old and had no gas cylinder, so it seemed a bit strange to leave it there. We wondered if it was in one in the storage rooms in the car park area but couldn't find one.

The kitchen was really outdated and didn't seem clean. It really needs new work surfaces and cupboards. The majority of kitchen utensils/equipment needed replacing. It was also disappointing to find that the dishwashing liquid had been watered down rather than it just being replaced with a new one. There were no teabags, salt & pepper, sugar or milk, which we've found all other places on our travels have provided. There was also no soap provided, which again all other places had provided including a basic caravan park we'd stayed in the previous night. These things were only little but would have made a big difference.

The living area had old uncomfortable sofas and generally wasn't very inviting or cosy.

The bathroom needs refitting. The sink, shower and toilet were all very old fashioned but not in a good way. The shower ran out of hot water quickly and it was a strange raised shower that you had to step up into. It could also be used as a one person bath. Because the shower was old, mould had started to form in the corners of the shower walls. The toilet didn't smell clean and had a slight smell of men's public toilets. It needed a good disinfecting all underneath and around the floor surrounding it. The clothes horse to dry clothes on was rusting.

The second bedroom had a shower curtain for curtains and really filthy windows but apart from that seemed fine. The main bedroom looked good but on closer inspection the mattress was very old and the pillows had also lost their new fluffiness and smelt of sweat and hair grease. The windows were also particularly dirty.

Looking around the place, all furniture must have been secondhand but not decent looking secondhand items. It was all mismatched and tatty looking. The owners had repainted the place and covered it in more modern soft furnishings but this unfortunately didn't hide the fact that the place was old and in desperate need of a really good refit. It generally also needs a really good clean, not just a quick wipe over.

On the plus side, the location is good. It's not beachfront but it's only a 2 minute walk to the beach.

I feel disappointed that I was unable to give this place a glowing review, as I was so impressed with the owner on booking. I wanted to like it but just couldn't get over the fact that it was a grubby old apartment disguised as something it isn't by using cheap and nasty looking furniture and soft furnishings.
