“Not quite welcoming”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2010

When we arrived at Maleny Lodge the hosts were absent and we were shown to our room by a nice young man from the office on the premises. At about 6pm Hilary and Ian arrived. They had been held up in Brisbane but we had not been informed. By this time the house was cold (though we lit the gas heater eventually), we were the only guests, we had no idea when the hosts would come and it was a bit creepy. The tray for tea and coffee was empty excepts for dried out used tea bags and we had not been made aware that there were more cups etc in the cupboard underneath. The bin beside the tray stayed full of rubbish for the two days. Not an auspicious start.
The house is shared with three large cats. We love cats but they sat wherever and the house smelled of cat, somewhat disguised by air freshener. There was also evidence of claw sharpening on the furniture so it all looked a bit tired.
The room was small but pretty with a half tester bed and an ensuite bathroom with a small shower. On the second day of our visit the bed and room were not serviced in any way, the bed not made the towels not changed. We were the only guests so it would be hard to claim they were overworked. I guess we should have said something but we didn't like to make the relationship strained.
Ian and Hilary were most helpful in getting us access to the internet on our computer when we needed to check on some personal matters and were always pleasant to us.
Breakfast on the verandah was very pleasant, with fresh fruit salad, juices, croissants, cooked eggs and other choices and coffee. Copious and delicious.
All in all, not what we expected in terms of welcome and attention to detail.

We stayed to celebrate my sisters 40th, we took the 'girly pamper package' such great value. Facial, massage, tint, etc (2hrs each). Hiliary and Ian are so lovely and made us feel like we were at home. Gorgeous french furnishings and cosy open fireplace, gorgeous rooms from another era. Wonderful breakfast on the balcony the next morning. It is hard to believe we were right in the middle of town so walked over to Gypsys Table restaurant for dinner, amazing food and service. Would highly recommend this wonderful getaway for girly time with friends or would be so romantic sipping port by the fireplace with a spouse. Winter time was perfect, but out the back they have a beautiful garden path/creek and lovely roses and a swimming pool (with grass around not the normal concrete - love it) so we are already planning a trip back for summer.

The B&B is set in a historic Victorian House, very nicely furnished with antique furniture. Even the bedrooms are furnished with antiques. The location was good, right along the main street, the house set far apart enough from the road as not to be noisy.

The room was on the small side, though lavishly furnished with antiques. The TV was in the lounge outside. There was a swimming pool in the yard behind the house if you felt like swimming.

Breakfast was good. A cooked breakfast served on the verandah facing the main street.

All in, a good and friendly place to stay in, especially if you are into atmospheric, historic places.

We were visiting the area and happened across Maleny Lodge on the main Maple Street. The guesthouse is an 1890’s building owned by a couple from England. The house is decorated in keeping with the Victorian period. I particularly admired the original blond beech floor throughout the house. Each room is individually furnished and named. We stayed in Flowering Gum Tree, a small ensuite double room decorated in keeping with the period complete with an antique canopy bed. Rooms have air conditioning and heating. Guests can sit in the roomy lounge furnished with comfy sofas. Tea and coffee is available at any time. The house has a serene mature garden and a small swimming pool.

The tariff included a generous, full cooked breakfast, including freshly squeezed orange juice fruit salad and toast, served on a balcony area at the front of the house.

Maleny is in the beautiful hinterland area of the Sunshine Coast. We were made very welcome by the hosts and a stay at the lodge completed a very relaxing tour of the area.

This historic 1894 house right in the center on Maleny is very nice. Ian and Hilary from England came to Queensland after they bought the house and lovingly restored it with antique furnishings and yet all the modern conveniences that one wants. Ian and Hilary are very friendly and helpful. We had a lovely breakfast on the porch. There is a small rainforest garden behind the house. And room to park a car.

The location is perfect--you can walk right out into the town. This is a beautiful part of Australia. We wish we had spent more time here. Don't miss the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.
