“Nice place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2013 via mobile

Really nice place to stay in magnetic island specially if you are looking for some peace. Its close to the beach and has a sweet swimming pool. The rooms are good and cute. The staff is friendly and the environment is really nice too. It's a good spot to relax and there's a bus stop in front of it.. So you can go around the island.

I stayed in a lovely little 3-share cabin and really enjoyed the "summercamp" vibe of it. The hostel had a great atmosphere with the koala sanctuary on site, the bar/restaurant and the pool area. The only thing that keeps me from rating the hostel as "excellent" is the location. The hostel is located quite far away from Nelly Bay (where the ferry departs) and they offer no shuttle whatsoever. Plus the cleanliness in the kitchen and bathroom facilities could be improved!

I stayed for 2 nights and got an amazing deal on the room. This made me expect a little less but the place was generally very good. My only issues was the cleanliness of the bathroom. I was in an en suite dorm of 8 people and the bathroom never seemed to be clean.

Other than that, the site was very pretty, the pool area fantastic, the kitchen large and clean with nice outside seating and the bar area cool. I was a chilled hostel with the bar stopping serving at 10pm, so not noisy when trying to sleep.

The on site koala village felt a lot like a zoo and was very overpriced but it was great to see the animals and get to handle so many of them.

I would stay again!

Room Tip: En suite rooms are best otherwise you have to go outside to go to the bathroom

Have been travelling for a year and stayed in Magnetic Island during November 2012. We stayed at Bungalow Bay, and were based in a little pretty bungalow in an 8 share. It was very nice and very clean. I would definitely recommend to do the Koala Tour as well as it was very good, fun and the tour guide was very nice. Only issue we had was because our bungalow was located right next to the koala village it was rather noisy at night so try and get one further up the field. Lovely experience though plus we played bingo one night and won a free endless bar tab... not bad at all :)

This hostel is situated in a great location. There are a lot of nice bays in the area. It's a 10 minute walk to the Horseshoe Bay which is a beautiful beach. It is a 25ish minute walk to some great hiking locations (a short bus ride if you want to pay the 90 cents). I hiked to the World War II forts. It was a nice hike with BEAUTIFUL views and took about an hour and a half. There is also another beautiful secluded beach by that area as well. The hostel itself was very clean and the bar had delicious drinks. During happy hour they were all $6. When I was there it wasn't too crowded so the night life wasn't too crazy but we had a few drinks and walked to the beach and it was nice. If you want a crazy time you can catch the bus to X base. The hostel had a nice camping area where some of my friends stayed and a nice kitchen supplied with cooking utensils. There were hammocks set up around the saltwater pool to relax in. The whole area was very beautiful. Overall I had a very enjoyable weekend!

Prior to deciding to stay on Maggie Island for 10 days during the winter high season, we considered many rental options. Prices ranged from $75 for an A frame back packers to $400 per night for a top of market villa.
We decided to opt of a totally different experience from our usual up market experiernce.... maybe a gamble, we were taking a risk. Or so we thought.
We read Koala Village reviews suggesting 50 were acceptable and 5 or 6 totally unacceptable.
Well, contrary to our possible concerns, we were introduced to a small on suite unit for $90 per night for a maximum stay of 7 nights. While from the outside, it didnt look overly exciting we soon discovered that this destination offered something quite unique and refreshing.
Horseshoe beach was exactly 6 minutes walk (we timed it). The bird life was extraordinary (the most prolific on the island). We were sheltered from the sun and 29 Deg temperatures by a wide variety of native trees that offered privacy. Not onces in 7 nights were we pestered with creapy crawlies mozzies or flies. We dined out side our unit at night and loved it. The staff, while very professional were not able to give 'on demand' attention because as we learned, this resort was experiencing high demand from young back packers arriving and leaving every day.
The facilities are award winning for its accommodation type, as we experienced for ourselves. Bungalow Bay Backpackers is not a Mom and Pop business but a very well managed and efficient specialist destination.
Bedding turned out to be great with crisp new sheets and towelling provided as required
The bar is casual, relaxed and inviting
To wrap up... if you want a beach based fun stay with a younger set this is the best on the island

Room Tip: If you want shared toilets and bathrooms, with other people take an A frame 8 person M or F unit If...
