A bit of background as to why we chose Travellers' Hideaway -
We were travelling down the East Coast of Australia on the Oz Experience bus, and planned our trip dates before we travelled. Without realising, we had planned to be in Magnetic Island for one of their monthly Full Moon parties. We had much difficulty trying to find a place to stay, as 90% of hostels had been booked up by keen travellers who had heard about the Full Moon parties earlier than us!
We managed to book one night in X Base hostel, but couldn't find anywhere to stay for our second and third nights. After much stress and flustering, we managed to get ourselves two nights accommodation at Travellers' Hideaway.
The hostel has a good location in Nelly Bay, and is in quaint surroundings, near the beach and a few shops and restaurants. You can walk around the island, or if you are lazy there are a coupe of buses an hour. The reception have the bus times all written up. The hostel is quite small, and is generally clean although not scrupulous. There are cute hammocks to laze around in and a nice outdoor area for socialising. The atmosphere here was one of the nicest we experienced during our trip - because the hostel was small everyone got to know each other. There is only a limited amount of things to do on Magnetic Island, so you will usually find someone else who wants to go on a fort walk, or go to the koala sanctuary. There is a relaxed, lazy atmosphere, and the owner and his wife are the kindest hostel owners we met. They are always happy to stop for a chat and recommend the cheapest place to pre-drink before going out, or what to do during the day.
What we found about many of the hostels we stayed in in Australia is that the bigger, cleaner and more commercial hostels tend to lack atmosphere and friendliness. Travellers' Hideaway may not be the cleanest or most organised hostel, but it is friendly and the atmosphere more than makes up for the fact that the hostel doesn't have a round-the-clock reception or 50 million tours being advertised in your face the whole time.
An enjoyable place to stay on a beautiful part of Australia.
