“A real adventure, not a simple tourist attraction!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2009

First, Pete and Trish's company also goes by "Daintree Specialised Tours" - but just ask anyone in the Daintree area for Pete Baxendell, and you'll find the guide you want!

How to describe Pete? We think of him as one-half Allan Quartermain, one-half Crocadile Dundee - but whatever he is, he is an Aussie personality that visitors should not miss! Half the fun of his tour is listening to his stories about the exciting life he has led: plantation owner, colonial soldier, game tracker, friend of cannibals, student of aboriginal medcine, etc. Tour with Pete, and you learn about an entire period of post-colonial African/PPG history, as well as about the rainforest.

And when you enter the rainforest, Pete throws you into his world of bush knowledge, sharing the Daintree's flora and fauna as only an expert can. His tour is very "hands on": expect to lick ants, taste plants, climb trees, wake up colonies of sleeping bats, play with leeches, put beach crabs in your mouth, swim in (croc-free) water holes, and, if you're lucky, see a passing cassowary. If you're idea of fun is to explore, learn, and experience things, rather than just watch the world roll by from the inside of a cramped tour bus, then this tour is for you!

Let me also mention how impressed we were by the personal attention Pete and Trish showed us. Trish's cookies - which are delicious! - were specially made without ingredients I was allergic to. And Pete, of course, was happy to answer all our questions, was very friendly, and easily coaxes reluctant city people out of their typical comfort zones (i defy any other person to persuade my wife to taste bugs...).

In sum, Pete and Trish offer a real adventure, not a simple tourist attraction. If you're a "Conde Nast Traveler" person, this tour may not be for you, but if you're a "Discovery Channel" person, you will love it! We certainly loved our day in Daintree and would recommend H&I/DST to anyone who wants a fun, unique experience.

“Amazing experience!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2008

This is one of the best memories I have of Australia! Pete was a great guide and made this a unique experience for us. We learned about many plants and animals, tasted green ants (really!), and learned about the local history. I suggest you wear long pants, a lightweight long-sleeve shirt, and sneakers, and bring a swimsuit and sandals. Pete takes care of everything else.

“An absolute must do!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2008

Pete Baxendell rocks!

Pete Baxendell is the owner and sole conductor of North Queensland Heritage & Interpretive Tours. His tour was the zenith of our trip to Australia – a fantastic means to end our trip on a high point.

In preparation for our trip we found that not every rainforest tour operator has a single conductor and we were concerned our trip could vary considerably from what others had experienced.

We could tell you precisely everything he does on the journey but why not enjoy the outing without the spoilers? Just do it!

Pete makes the Daintree Rainforest a truly fascinating and wonderful place. We had previously driven up to Cape Tribulation for Jungle Surfing but his ride and walks through the rainforest was full of detailed information that turned it into a different experience. There was no down time as he regaled us with stories and information.

Pete’s wife makes lunches and cookies every bit as good as his tour. You literally cannot stop taking another cookie after the first one, or the second, or the….etc.

Both kids and adults will have immense fun while learning about an important and unique ecosystem.

This will be the experience you talk about when your friends ask how your holiday/vacation went.

Put this down as a “must do” and a “must do again.”

“Inquiring Minds Want To Know... Pete can tell you!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2008

After reading many positive postings on TripAdvisor forums, we booked a day tour with Pete Baxendell. As we were in the Port Douglas area in June, the number of tourists in the area was low and we lucked out and had Pete all to ourselves the entire day.
He picked us up in Port Douglas and we climbed into his customized Land Rover. Pete took us to several locations; an area in Port where fruit bats had begun roosting, a rainforest walk on private land where he showed us MANY interesting plants and animal signs, and a pool-side picnic lunch (with his wife's YUMMY Anzac cookies!) on a stream near Cape Tribulation. He shared his enormous knowledge of the animal, plant and indigenous people with us, and I like to think some of our crazier questions had him clearing out some cobwebs in his mind!
The person who posted to this forum;
gives more background, I just wanted to get a review going to give Pete’s happy customers a place to put our reviews on TripAdvisor!
