Just been on this wonderful tour with Willie Gordon and a diverse group of about 8 others. We did the longer tour, about 4 hours in all from Cooktown, and it's not for those with weak ankles or dicky knees because of the occasional scramble down narrow spaces between boulders and so on. If you went in the warmer months, rain protection, a hat and some stamina for heat would be essential; I would take an 11 year old but probably not a younger child. Winter was great. The 15,000 or so years-old rock art is beautiful and moving, and the local knowledge of the functions of plants and animals is fascinating. It is one of the least disturbed places I have ever been, and a marvellous, fresh and beautiful setting. Willie asks personal questions and it's probably not a tour for the cynical. But I suspect it's a self-fulfilling kind of audience -- if you weren't up for it you wouldn't be on that kind of tour. The best thing for me was the opportunity to see and hear a warm and friendly indigenous man as a leader and an articulate expert in his field. We asked lots of dumb questions and were met with courtesy and relevant explanations. (A lot of aboriginal people think our way of barging in there with upfront questions is very rude, and it began to seem that way to me too after a few quiet hours with Mr Gordon.) Back in the office this week I look and my colleagues and want to ask "Can't you see I'm changed by that experience?"
