“Service left us unhappy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2011

My husband and I were traveling through far north Qld during a rather rainy and cold time, and it was important to us to have a wood-burning fire in any lodge we stayed. We asked on the phone and Allawah told us that all of the cabins had a wood fire, following which we traveled to the rather rural location one evening. Before we saw the room, we were asked to pay in advance and were disappointed to find afterwards that our room had a gas fire with fake logs. We understood that this could have been a misunderstanding, but were very surprised to find the woman host very aggressive with us when we told her we were disappointed and didn't want to stay the second night. She immediately required we pay extra money to stay (without any indication that the misunderstanding could have been on both sides). We were also made to feel that (a) it was our fault for asking her too many questions on the phone before arriving (basic things like "can we stay two nights?"), (b) we had intentionally "tricked" her into getting a lower rate by saying we wanted to stay two nights, and (c) anyone else would have been fine with the fire as is. It simply ruined the stay for us despite the lovely surroundings.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before being made to pay.

My partner and I stayed in the Hideaway Lodge for 4 very relaxing nights. The accommodation was superb with every possible attention to detail met with comfort and style. Fresh hot bread delivered each morning was a beautiful touch. Unfortunately our trip was soured by our host Trish, who was less than welcoming from the moment we arrived. A chastising for using too much firewood was the icing on the cake to ensure that regretfully, we will not be returning.

We are sorry that your experience under the previous ownership was disappointing. We replaced the gas fire in Treetops with an inside log fire, and also an outside deck open log fire - and we supply unlimited firewood! We would love to see you again to experience the improved amenities.

Ah! Allawah! Where the wallabies wander by, the kookaburras chuckle, and the dry leaves of the eucalyptus clap gently in the warm breeze. My husband and I enjoyed every minute of our 8 days stay here in October 2010 during a month’s visit to Australia from the UK. We found Allawah on the internet and it certainly lived up to its website description. We “sat, stayed and rested awhile” in Hideaway Lodge and were most impressed by the privacy, the comfortable, luxurious, tasteful accommodation, the hot spa on the balcony with the panoramic view of native bush, the delicious homemade bread and treats provided by Trish, and to cap it all a nightly visit from a possum carrying her baby on her back. All of this so conveniently situated for exploring the Atherton Tablelands. Thank you Trish and Pete for the attention to detail and for thoroughly spoiling us!

My partner and I stayed at Allawah when in Northern Qld to visit family. Our first impressions were hesitant - we had expected beautiful rainforest rather than rural bush setting, but the property itself was a pleasant surprise. For 4 days we drank wine, sat in the spa bath, enjoyed the freshly baked bread and totally relaxed.
It was a very much needed break from reality and well priced.

Whilst driving on the dirt outback roads which is such a lovely drive to make you feel you are arriving to the hinterlands and about to enjoy peace and quiet we arrive and we immediately felt at home and comfortable. We were welcomed like we had never been done so before, we were taken to our lodge and shown through. We stayed in the Hideaway Lodge and what a gorgeous place it was. Immaculate condition, with gorgeous kangaroos all around and bush land views.
When we arrived in the lodge we had fresh baked cookies, home made jams and BBQ food in the fridge ready for the next two mornings. Every morning we received fresh homemade baked bread, we were asked what time we would like it delivered and to the minute it was there outside on the washing machine in a little red riding hood basket waiting for us and so nice and warm.
Such friendly owners and without a doubt would stay there longer than we did and that was 5 days. So peacefull, the air was beautiful and so quiet.
The Lodge has a spa on the balcony looking over the hinterland at such a long distance no one in your view but trees and kangaroos.
Highly Reccommended!!!!

As a person for whom only the best will do - this property fit the bill. I stayed in their Hideaway Lodge and it was a wonderful experience.

Allawah Retreat was everything it advertised itself to be - private and luxurious. The property consists of four lodges - or chalets - or whatever term you would like to apply. Each is completely self-contained and surrounded by forest. You can't see any other unit. I had reserved Hideaway which is their most upscale unit.

You enter into an area that is an open space with a small dining table, living area, and kitchen.

Everything is make of lovely hardwoods - the tables, floors, cabinets, etc. There is a wood fired stove, plasma TV, and a surround sound system. Port and chocolates are waiting.

Allawah Retreat provides everything. The kitchen is fully equipped with all plates, silverware, glasses, and cooking equipment. Better yet, there is everything you might need - salt, pepper, Saran Wrap, paper towel, barbecue sauce, etc.

In the refrigerator are two plastic breakfast containers. I was told they would bring a third one for my three night stay. Each one contained a breakfast for two people - four eggs, bacon, tomato - one had potatoes and the other sausage. The refrigerator also had a litre of milk, 1.5 litres of orange juice, and homemade jams. For purchase there is wine and beer at very reasonable prices. Hot freshly baked bread is delivered at whatever time you specify.

There is a king size bed. All of the rooms overlook the Atherton Tablelands since the chalets are perched on a hillside.

Beyond the bathroom, which had a king size shower for two - the piece de resistance is the deck. There is the spa whirlpool which can easily accommodate a small family. As you can see there is also a barbecue and refrigerator.

If you sit on the deck your only view is of the bush and the valley.

This property is six miles from the very small town of Torla and ten miles from Atherton. The hosts, who both used to work for Qantas - one as a pilot - can also provide a range of pre-packaged meals - barbecues, curries, etc. - all at very reasonable prices.

A highly recommended property.

My husband & I stayed at Hideaway Lodge from 23/03/09 - 30/03/09 on a 32-day trip from the UK. It was everything we had hoped for & more. So peaceful & private; we enjoyed our stay in this perfect Lodge so much, we were very reluctant to go on to Sydney. The retreat is situated in unspoilt, natural grounds with stunning scenery. It was just fantastic to see the wallabies & their joeys wandering around the grounds. The sight & the sound of the birds was breathtaking. It is very close to all the 'must do' attractions and has some great places to visit right on the doorstep. Trish made us feel so welcome nothing was too much trouble. We felt very spoilt with all the treats, especially the fresh warm bread every morning. The food hampers - I think we sampled them all, were very good indeed.
Trish and her husband do a sterling job keeping up such high standards. I hope we will be able to visit Queensland again and Allawah Retreat will be on the top of our list.
