“Secret Weekend Away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2012

My Husband booked a secret weekend away and we ended up at Hilltonia, in the Settlers Cottage. Upon arrival, Anthony the host was very warm and helped keep the little details of my weekend a secret from me, which was grealty appreciated.
The property has attached B&B style rooms, and then 5 cottages. A tropical pool and full size tennis court complete the ameneties. The cottages are spaced around the bushland, to ensure privacy, which is exactly what you get.
Our cottage had a huge bed with canopy, sunken HUGE spa bath, masses of towels and robes, gas log fire, LCD TV, kitchenette with microwave, large bathroom with very large shower. Dining table for 2 and 2 massive armchairs completed the lounge area. I also appreciated the flip top coffee table, holding old trashy mags that I had time to flick through. The balcony spanded the width of the cottage, and with little table and chairs and BBQ, it faced towards the beach (a distant view)
A few hiccups on arrival - no breakfast basket in our room as advised, and the bathroom sliding door was broken, however, 1 phone call to reception (on our mobiles as the rooms have no phone) and he was quickly at our cottage, basket in hand and fixed the door.
A few things that dont quite demand the prices charged: the mattress on our bed was terrible! Maybe I've been spoilt with our new one at home, but it was hard and lumpy - felt like a bag of straw. When sitting in the spa, I noticed that our mattress was in fact 2 thin mattresses on top of each other - simply not good enough for a property of this calibre. 2 bad nights sleep and a trip to the Chiro when we got home. The BBQ on the verandah was unusable without a high pressure wash - years of baked on stuff. They could also do with a new updated outdoor set.
I would also ask the cleaners to step up their game. Behind doors, splatter in the microwave, dirty utensils etc. Also, light on the bathroom accessories - take your own bath gel if you dont like using soap. This cottage also overlooks the local tip, so while standing on the balcony admiring the views, just dont look to the right.
On the upside, the spa was amazing, the towels luxurious, the breakfast basket ample and refilled every day. The hosts also arranged a mutitude of extra's for us, lunch at a local winery, dinner at a local restuarant, an in-room massage - all lovely.
THis property is fantastic if you are visting the hot springs, as it is literally over the road. I would advise on booking private treatments and pools, as the public area was overcrowded on the day we visiting. Hundreds of people, some queuing to get into the pools, and in all shapes, sizes and varying degrees of body maintenance (read: Gorilla's in the mist!)
I would recommend this property, but maybe not the Settlers Cottage. A bit on the high $$ side too.

Room Tip: Steer clear of the Settlers Cottage - other reviews sound wonderful!

Dear The4Birds

Thanks for taking the time to review your recent stay at Hilltonia Homestead.

While we liked to hear about the positive points of your stay with us, we also appreciate hearing about the shortcomings so that we are able to make improvements for the future. We believe our guests sleep quality to be a very important factor in the overall enjoyment of their stay. As a result we have already replaced the mattress in question. Please be assured that at no time was the previous mattress ever two mattresses atop one another, as this would certainly not be acceptable to our standards.

Again, thank you for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back for a stay in our cottages in the future.

Regards

Anthony

The photos and website do not do this beautiful place any justice! Staying in the Coral Cottage, we got EXACTLY everything we wanted... a beautiful big spa nestled in the corner of the lounge room overlooking the beautiful view, the fireplace and TV all in the same room so you can actually spend time with each other rather than the spa being in a separate room. The 4 post bed, divine and luxurious - as I almost had to jump up onto it. There were plenty of towels.... Oh, and then there's the double shower with a massive glass window - don't worry, there's no one for miles so you're the only one that enjoys the view! We literally had our morning shower with the sun beaming in on us. The breakfast hamper was beautiful and we ate it on the balcony. They didn’t leave a stone unturned. Whilst there is a fully equipped kitchen, I made dinner in a slow cooker which we bought with us as there’s no restaurants in the near facility… but we wanted to stay in anyway. We didn’t want to be anywhere else. You can have your hot springs! I'll pick Hilltonia anyday. It has become ‘our’ special place.

Hilltonia is best located if you want to combine hot spring experience with accommodation, because it is just a stone throw away from Mornington peninsula hot spring.

My partner and I went there in February 2011 (apparently the latest i can choose is June 2011), and we booked the B&B suite as it was the only one available. Anthony, the host gave us a warm greeting and helped us to settled in, the room is cozy, clean with warm ambient lighting. There is a swimming pool in front of our room, but we didn’t use it as we went to the hot spring for a Dinner and Bath package.

On the morning of checking out, we had a hearty breakfast delivered to our room and took a quick stroll to explore the large property. We found that there are a few self-contained cottages with different themes all embraced by the bushland, they located reasonable far from each other to ensure privacy. All cottages are raised up so that all have fantastic view from their balconies. We wondered out of their fence line and step onto a pasture with a panorama view of the hills beyond.

The pricing is on the high end, but it is perfect located for hot spring going couples and the quality of services makes it a worthwhile experience.

We stayed in the Mediterranean room, which had a lovely four poster bed, couches, tv, stereo, dining table and kitchen. The bathroom was large with a 2 seater sunken spa, which was fantastic. There was a massive balcony with a barbeque and table and chairs to take in the view. The kitchen had a breakfast hamper including: bacon, sausages, breads, crumpets and eggs, milk, juice and breakfast cereals, with all cooking utensils and supplies that were required. There was also an air conditioner and ceiling fan, which is very important in the Summer!

There was a swimming pool and tennis court that we didn't use.

The area is pretty secluded and is a short drive to the reception house from the cottage and about a 5 minute drive to the beach. The only downfall was that you couldn't walk to the beach- it was just too far.

The Hot Springs are literally just across the road, which we highly recommend. It was very relaxing.

I highly recommend Hilltonia Homestead. It is one of the best places that I have stayed at and the room was really beautifully presented and very comfortable and very clean on arrival.

Just be careful of the rabbits on the driveway, when your driving in :)

My girlfriend and I, visited here for an overnight get away and found it to be extremely peaceful and convenient. Being a short stay, we didn't bring the small essential cooking items such as salts, sugars, oil etc, however, all of these were there and we found this to be very convenient. The scenery around the cottages is beautiful, lots of privacy and calmness to the entire experience. The cottage we stayed in was the African and was clean, tidy and had a great spa, plenty of towels which. Overall, this was a great little getaway, I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting some privacy and seclusion, and I'll be staying there again.

Very good peaceful location... decent size room... a big bed... a big spa . pretty much everything one would need....

Location is the best bit about this place... situated on what looks like a big country farm ... with endless views of the grasslands .. trees... plenty of rabbits running across in the driveways.. No disturbance at all.... right opposite the Peninsula springs...

Though furniture did look bit old and was worn out...but nothing major.. felt like it added to the country feel of the place ...

Will visit again !!!

Room Tip: Book one of the cottages if you want seclusion, peace and quiet...

Perfectly located opposite the Hot Springs. Reasonably priced, especially when cooked breakfast is included. Our hosts were really friendly and our room by the pool was a lovely relaxing experience. Will definitely be going back.
