“Worth the drive!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

I stumbled upon this hotel while planning a northern California trip and looking for a place to stay after touring the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. What a great find. The very steep, winding drive over the King Range was a bit hair-raising at times but totally beautiful. The hotel is right on the water, overlooking a black sand beach with tide pools. We saw about 20 seals on the rocks in the morning. The room was big and airy, and very clean. All the rooms have balconies overlooking the beach. There's not much going on in this sleepy little town but that's in its favor. We had breakfast at the food stand just a short walk from the hotel. The one girl working there produced the most amazing crepes. I had the special which was banana and nutella and my friend had the spinach and feta. I would love to come back and spend a week here.

This hotel was situated right on the seafront with stairs down to a rocky and black sand beach replete with fascinating rock pools. We were greeted by the friendly owner and given a great deal of information about local attractions and restaurants. The rooms were decorated elegantly and were spacious and well equipped with microwave and refrigerator. They were spotlessly clean and the beds were wide and comfortable. The balcony from our second floor room gave a spectacular view of the coastline.
For people who enjoy nature there were numerous places to explore-mountains, forests, seashore, but above all we enjoyed the uncrowded beaches and lack of noise apart from the marvellous crashing of ocean waves and cries of seabirds.

The road leading to Shelter Cove was steep and windy in parts, but no problem for any motorists.
However if your GPS leads you up a gated unpaved road, avoid this route which is only suitable for off-road vehicles.

This resort will live long in our memory as a perfect retreat and haven from stress.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second or third floor have a wider view of the ocean, but all are good.

While on a road trip of the Costal Redwoods for our honeymoon my husband and I came upon Shelter Cove and The Oceanfront Inn. What was supposed to be an overnight stay turned into 3 days and now a traditional anniversary trip up every June. The innkeeper Phil is very cool and laid back, helpful and always on the property if you need anything. The rooms are perfect for two. We always stay in the larger Captians Quarters, it is always so clean and has an amazing view. Waking up to hear the waves crashing and going out on the private balcony to watch them is a plus. Such a romantic place to getaway. On the weekends the place livens up as they are the only inn on the cove that has a full restaurant ( reservations are a must for this place ) the food is amazing and everything is fresh right out of the ocean! We'll continue to come back year after year..

After a great day visiting the beautiful Humbolt Redwoods National Park, my family was looking for a hotel right on the Ocean where our kids could explore the beach and tidal pools. The Oceanfront Inn in Shelter Cove exceeded all of our expectations!

First of all, the road leading into Shelter Cove is really not as bad as some are writing. Yes, there are hills and curves, but it is a very safe and well maintained road. There are plenty of pull offs along the way to allow local drivers to pass.

At check-in, we were greeted by a friendly clerk and were charged the amount as promised, no surprises! He gave us an over-view of the beaches and restaurant options in the cove. The restaurant attached to the hotel is only open Thursdays - Sundays, and we checked in on a Tuesday. He directed us to a local pizza joint where we purchased our dinner and also pastries for breakfast the next morning.

The room was very clean, simple and comfortable. Beds were very comfy, and the fridge and microwave came in handy with dinner leftovers and for breakfast. We spent the night with the sliding balcony door slightly opened which let in the sounds of the ocean waves crashing on the shore.

The view from our balcony was spectacular! We enjoyed several hours on the beach with the kids walking along tidal pools and the rocks on the shore. Many great memories were made as this was our kids' (aged 9, 6, and 1) first ever trip to the ocean.

I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking to stay at a simple, clean, oceanfront hotel!

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean so you can't really go wrong!

The road to Shelter Cove is not for the faint of heart with it's curves, and steep climb up and over the King Range.

We wanted to be there for the sunset and we made it on time. The Inn is right on the water.

The room was spotless and we had a great view of the Pacific from the balcony.

Dinner at the Cove Restaurant was convenient to the Inn and we had a fine meal.

My wife and I flew into Shelter Cove as the first stop on a week long getaway through the wine country of Sonoma Valley. We tied the plane down not 250 yards from the Oceanfront Inn and walked over. We were greeted very warmly and when we entered our room we fell in love with the place. The room was simple and very clean, with a King size bed which was the most comfortable we experienced on the whole journey. Stepping out onto the balcony we were treated to an expansive view of the rugged coast, and a neat little inlet right at our feet. Sea Otters were cavorting around in the water, and just off shore we saw Grey whales passing by on their way North. The Inn has a tidy little restaurant that serves well prepared food, although nothing spectacular. Just a short distance away is a food truck we were told about which offered amazing fish tacos, and really great breakfast burritos. If you are looking for a laid back spot to unwind, this is it!!! NOTE TO PILOTS: The strip is daylight only and has no instrument procedures. The area is posted in the AFD as being subject to frequent fog.

Indeed this Boutique Hotel was seated right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. The rooms are very modern and clean. Very quiet place with a restaurant located on the first floor. I didn't see any elevators, but didn't mind climbing the two staircases located opposite sides of the building.

We kept our sliding door open so we could hear the waves crashing. All rooms face the ocean. This is a very quiet area and even though I had a well-known phone service, I couldn't get any service until we drove out of the area and were within a couple of miles of the nearest town. I wasn't able to get the internet either, but who needs it when you are trying to get away from the craziness!

We were able to get numerous TV channels if we wanted to watch TV. We brought most of our food and did not eat at the restaurant which opened on a Thursday thru Sunday. Many people were eating there after we returned from a day trip to Fort Bragg.

The attendant at the hotel was very helpful to us when we couldn't find an open store.

Room Tip: Black Sand beach is beautiful!! Long beach and we were warned about the "sleeper waves".
