“Old, Rustic and Great For Dog Walkers”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

We have never stayed here overnight but often pop in for lunch or dinner as it is very convenient when out walking. It has a large garden, covered outside area and bar which all allow dogs in. The menu is good with simple offerings such as fish and chips, ham and eggs, sandwiches etc. The platters were particularly good value @ £8.95 with a choice of seafood or ploughmans. The garden is well kept and enclosed so safe for guests with children and I was interested to see that they do various theme nights that we try in future.

This is a traditional, old pub with traditional food. If it is white linen cloths and gastro dishes you are looking for then this isn't for you but for a pint and a spot of lunch on a sunny day then this is ideal.

We spent a lovely Easter break here whilst visiting family. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and we had a great meal on our first night. The breakfasts were fabulous and our room was clean and comfortable. We had a very enjoyable stay. The beer was good too!

Room Tip: If you are tall or large you may be better off not going for the budget rooms as the bathrooms are a...

Old-fashioned pub/restaurant in a big old pub in a delightful village setting. Clean and warm, with helpful attentive staff who are always happy to help you. Good range of well-kept hand-pumped local beers and also full range of national lagers and other drinks to suit all. Restaurant food is tasty, generous portioned and freshly prepared and cooked, and priced very reasonably. Good choice of courses adequate for all tastes. Wide choice of cooked and other options for breakfast was a pleasant surprise for this type of establishment.
Room with en suite shower room was a good size, clean bright comfortable and warm. Amenities basic but just fine for the excellent value bed and breakfast package, and Sky TV included was a definite bonus, as was free wifi. Car park, garden tables and also a large covered smoking area for those who indulge.

It's too easy to pick holes in minor issues like it would be handy to have a light switch by the bed, but none of them spoil the enjoyment of this lovely friendly good value hostelry where I will definitely stay again.

We stopped in here for lunch after a trip to the castle in Bramber. There's a nice atmosphere to the place with plenty of little nooks and crannies to sit in and lovely low beams on the ceiling. The food was good - we tried the fish and chips and the ploughmans lunch which were both good sized portions and well cooked. The chef often popped out of the kitchen to clean up around the tables and see how everything is and the staff were friendly and attentive.

We stayed here as our midpoint stop on a two day attempt at the South Downs Way and cannot fault it. Absolute value for money, with a warm welcome, spacious and well equipped clean rooms together with awesome food and a great atmosphere in the bar in which to let it all settle down. Breakfast was on par with dinner and I am chuffed that we found this gem.

Room Tip: The owner was very flexible. Let them know what you need and they will sort it out - as they did fo...

We stayed in the Castle Inn for two nights in March for a wedding. The price was £80 per night for the standard double so we booked that rather than their budget double.

The Inn itself is quaint. It's quite busy with locals and tourists and seems to do a fantastic trade at lunctime with their food. Be prepared to wait at the busy times - wait time was nearly an hour for lunch however the food is fresh and well cooked.

The standard room was supposed to have a king bed but this wasn't the case so we were either put in the wrong room or their descriptors are not very accurate. Our room was on the first floor facing the street. This was quite a noisy room. From early in the morning you could hear cars driving up and down past the hotel. You could also hear people talking downstairs in the bar until the pub closed.

When we arrived, our room wasn't available as the hot water wasn't working. They managed to fix the shower but not the sink so we had no hot water in the sink for the two days.

Breakfast is lovely. Orange juice, tea, coffee and a full english. The food was good quality and the portion was large. Breakfast was very much a plus point. However breakfast is only served between 7am and 9:15am. So you'll only be able to avail of it if you are willing to get up early.

Check out is at 10:30am. The staff were knocking on the door right at 10:30 and the hoover was on. With breakfast finishing at 9:15am and check out by 10:30am it's not really a relaxing location.

Room Tip: Not on the first floor or at the front.

This pub is very welcoming, food is excellent, rooms are clean and great value for money, staff are very friendly, not much more you could ask for. we visited for an overnight stop while walking the South Downs. All our needs were catered for and had a great stay. Would recommend.
