We attended the new year gala ball at Whittlebury Hall with friends which included an overnight stay. The gala ball evening itself was really enjoyable with great food, great service and good entertainment and our party of 4 were fortunate enough to share a table with 3 other couples who were friendly and sociable, and like us, looking to have a wonderful night out.
Afternoon tea started the festivities and Daniel, one of the waiters did a superb job serving us. The champagne reception was a lovely start to the evening and glasses were filled and refilled without hesitation. The selection on offer to purchase for the table wasn't good however with just 3 to choose from and with only one of those we would want to drink - the most expensive! Couldn't believe they didn't have popular brands such as Tattinger, or Veuve Clicquot.
Accommodation leaves a lot to be desired. The rooms are very dated and in need of a complete refurb. The carpet in our room was badly stained and worn, the wardrobe door didn't close properly and the bath and shower looked grubby with black spots all round the rim where the grouting had worn away. Also, the towel rail is at the opposite end of the bathroom to the over the bath shower - not well thought out at all.
In summary I would give 4.5 stars for the gala ball but only 2 for the accommodation. As the ball is only open to residents we would probably only consider attending again if there is some investment made in updating the rooms.
