This is my first review on behalf of my parents...though they felt so strongly about their very unfortunate experience at this establishment it seems only right to pass on their comments.
My parents have been here many times in the past. The Carpenters Arms has had a checked past - from being one of the better restaurants around years ago - to going down a little, to a more recent resurgence in the last 3-4 years. In the past, I have known great food here, and so have my parents. However, last Saturday evening - mid September 2013 was awful.
The evening started with a bad table selection. My mother's theory is the hotel guests get the best tables and local non residents get the crumby tables. On asking to be moved, they were told this would be ok, but they wouldnt like where they were taken (they didnt).
They waited nearly an hour to be asked what they wanted to eat. Even then they had to stop the waitress in her tracks to ask to be served. The wine menu arrived and the same waitress asked if they wanted red or white...then told them which wines were not available. The overall sense was that this place has run out of wine - as restaurants do when they are on their last legs..
When the food arrived, it was not great. My father's pork was dry and the food was not hot. Dessert arrived some time later. After specifically asking that coffee should come after dessert was completed, the same superstar waitress arrived with coffee half way through....she remembered and left with the coffees. The same (now cold) coffees resurfaced later once the desserts had left the table.
The service overall was dreadful, the food was average, and not inexpensive.
I see many good reviews on here...so they must be doing something right. For this particular Saturday night, they failed dismally...and my parents (who have probably visted this restaurant 2-3 times a year for the last 4), will not be coming back.
