“Countryside Spread Ideal for a Wedding and Long Weekend with Friends & Family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2009

We rented the entirety of Pekes for four nights over the first long weekend in May for us (the bride and groom) and 60 of our bridal party and friends.

We had an absolutely fantastic time, probably at least partially due to the great early Spring weather - Pekes must be at its best looks-wise at that time of year, and the nights were balmy enough to have doors open and people all over the grounds. For us, the aim was somewhere that a lot of people (i.e. a lot of students and people who had already paid for expensive plane tickets) could stay all together (communal living!) for a reasonable price. Pekes was really ideal for this, and we found that the "shabbiness" was actually pretty atmospheric and fun, and probably all miss "staying at Gran's". Yes, some of the mattresses are very old, and some fixtures are a bit tatty, but for a weekend during which everyone (mostly people from 24-40, with at least 8 kids between 4 months-5 years) had such a great time, it wasn't that important in the end!

The owner, Eva, was very helpful in sorting a few niggling but important things out for us over the weekend, and is sometimes on-hand (literally next to the back lawn - though I think she doesn't always stay there) to help or inform if needed. She also has some lovely cats.

The pool was absolutely great and was used all the time, as was the tennis court. We didn't find that there was any temp. issue with the pool, but the solar panels had been getting a lot of sun, so who knows... We also had a few late-night jacuzzi and sauna sessions which were lovely - if it's a bit chillier than expected, it's literally because you have to let it warm in advance for about an hour.

To address one of the previous reviews, it was made very clear to us in our contract from the start that linen, loo roll, soap/shampoo, etc. would not be provided by Pekes. This is very much a self-catered residence, and not a hotel, for good and bad. Ideal for us, and everyone umcomplainingly brought what they needed (ironically, except for the bride and groom!).

All in all, great value from our experience as a large party, with a real communal atmosphere and unique buildings, in the beautiful Sussex countryside.

This review isn't for the Oast House, it's for the Tudor View cottage. But still at Pekes. We've been here twice now, for our annual girlie getaway (well, a group of 30 somethings). It's just what we need - for less than £50 each for 3 nights, with the pool, sauna and jacuzzi and fab countryside.

Yes, it's a pretty basic cottage, it could never be described as boutique or 5 star. It wouldn't suit everyone as the bedrooms are inter-connecting, however for a sociable weekend we squeeze two into the twin room, two onto the double and one onto the sofa bed. There is only one shower, but there is another one you can use in the jacuzzi room. The kitchen is well equipped and has a dishwasher, microwave, tumble dryer etc. The only things we'd take are some decent sharp knives. You have to provide your own loo roll and hand soap, but all the kitchen washing up/cleaning stuff you need is provided. We asked for a DVD player which was provided without charge. We also get firewood and local eggs delivered as well for a minimal charge.

The swimming pool is usually chilly, but we did go the coldest weekend in January with ice on the ground so it's not surprising it struggled as it's solar heated. It's fun to splash around in though. The sauna and jacuzzi were great in 2008, we had real problems with the jacuzzi in 2009 and couldn't get it to heat up at all which meant we wasted several pound coins trying to heat it. The sauna worked well though.

Tesco will deliver to the door which is excellent. Locally there is a very good pub - the Six Bells in Chiddingley, and the one at the Golden Cross is quite good too. There are good walks right from the cottages and there are maps in the cottage.

The main attraction for us is the cost, the pool/sauna/jacuzzi, the open fire, and the countryside. For a winter break, it's ideal. We'll probably be back in 2010 as well!

  • Liked — The price! and the countryside views
  • Disliked — Inter-connecting bedrooms won't suit everyone

The Oast House is one of those properties which looks great from the website, and when you get there you realise that they only showed you the very best bits.

Thye location is stunning, about 8 miles from Lewes East Sussex, and sourrounded by countryside and rolling hills,

From the outside the self catering property looks great, but the inside is sadly lacking in , in many areas.

THe property is predominely furnished in a mismatch of very, veyr old and worn out furniture - think of your grannies front room, but worse.

The beds were old, mis matched furniture, torn covers on chairs, and stains on the bedroom stool.

There are some great pieces of elegant furniture, but as for shabby chic - it was just shabby.

THe kitchen does have a great big family table, and is of a more modern design and very clean, but some of the appliances were literally 20 - 30 years old - a very retro ( orange) and must be original sandwich toaster really set the seen !

The pool was of good size, and the jacuzzi in the grounds was well used.

The owner charges for EVERYTHING - £10 for a single bed linen set, £15 for a double, £28 for cleaning and even the electricty isn't include - and bearing in mind we paid over £1000 for a 4 night break in October !

There is no welcome pack, they dont supply towels, not even a bar of soap or toilet roll,

Overall - great location, great potential to be fantastic - spoilt by penny pinching owner.
