Description: Book a romantic dinner in the restaurant at The Hoste Hotel, where the Chefs create dishes that owe much to locally sourced produce, not least a great selection of local seafood from the nearby coast. We have a high quality, informal, relaxed atmosphere with very friendly and efficient staff. The imaginative menu is complimented by a 200-bin wine list that includes some keenly priced classics.

“Excellent service, food in a lovely area but be aware very expensive!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

We wanted to go out on a Saturday evening for dinner over Christmas and we thought that we may struggle to book in so last minute however. The hoste accommodated us by providing our large party of 12 the cellar room.
When we arrived we were taken downstairs where they actually store all the wine and use the room for private wine tasting parties. On this occasion they set the room up for dinner for our party. We had our own waitress just for us and it was super as we didn't expect it! The food is lovely providing a children's menu. The menus can be accessed online before we went. It is very Fancy and maybe not to everyone's taste so check on the website first!

Super surroundings and great service made this family Christmas trip lovely!

“A wonderful birthday party”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

I gave a party for six for a special friend's birthday at The Hoste on Monday lunchtime. We received a very warm welcome from the Restaurant manager and it was a lovely surprise to find the table had been decorated with twinkly stars. We all chose the catch of the day which was Lemon Sole and it was cooked to perfection with amazing accompaniments. The charming new General Manager took the trouble to introduce herself to us and when the chef came to the table to enquire if we had enjoyed our lunch we were able to tell him that it was the most delicious sole we had had for many years. A 'wow' birthday cake then arrived with lit candles. We left feeling a very happy party.

“Poor quality”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

My wife and I visited for the second time recently as we were in the area on business. We only wanted a light lunch so went into the bar which was full and were shown to a sofa with a table near the conservatory. My wife ordered a spicy piri piri chicken wrap which had one piece of chicken in one side and raw onion in the other. As she hates raw onion she was unable to finish it. I ordered a creme freche and smoked salmon sandwich which was ok but nothing special (in spite of the description Letzer's smoked salmon...) and it came with huge slices lot of bread to fill it out.
The experience wasn't helped by a waitress tripping around with the dreadful "... is everything alright..."
Finally Hoste, please get rid of the coy pricing policy on your menus of just having a small single price such as 8 or 6 or 10 with no pound sign and never a hint of a pence price. It smacks of being far too precious in my view! Sorry about this review but I used to love going to the Hoste in the days of Paul Whittome's ownership.

“New Owners need to tighten up”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013 via mobile

This Restuarant has changed since Emma left. The food we had, both fish mains was good - halibut and bream of good quality and the desserts were quite good too.

So what has changed? It is the service, attention to detail and the ambience created. The kitchen performed OK. The menu is scaled down from Whittome days and less attractive. The service was not great. We were told our table was ready only to sit and eat bread for over 20 minutes before it arrived; we were very happy with drinks in the reception lounge. There was intrusive background music - very "non-Hoste". It was turned down on request, but the atmosphere was of a gastro pub, not a wonderful old inn. They moved us away from a poorly controlled family with three under 5 (top marks for this) but they needed to be prompted for more drinks - when that happens the owners should worry about profits!

We have been here many times in the last 4 years and fear that this Restuarant will fall further unless a grip is taken; there is plenty of good choice within 5 miles of The Hoste.
