“a little piece of italy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2014

a new feature of this old coaching inn is the addition of a pizza oven. Offering first class pizzas made to individual requirements by the resident italian chef named cosimo. The seafood pizza designed by top barmaid emily was superb. This is a great place to go for an evening meal in welcoming surroundings. For an italian night out get out of your gondola and pay a visit to the red lion.

“Large portions but food not great ”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

It's a wetherspoons and everyone knows the chain, but the food has gone downhill over the last year, the prices have gone up and the portion size is always large, but the quality is not great !

“Steak night Tuesdays”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

Family night out mid week. We all had different meals and all enjoyed our food. I ate the mixed grill which was a deal with a drink included. Fantastic quality and value. The whole place was busy and I can see why. We'll visit again soon to try one of the other theme nights.

“Only place open on a Sunday! But lovely food and charming staff nonetheless.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

We pitched up in Wirksworth hoping to have lunch and explore the town. Only trouble was, none of the places we fancied eating in were open. Yes it was a Sunday and off-season, but we didn't expect our choice to be that limited. Le Mistral was open but the price was a bit more than we fancied spending for a spot of lunch.

So we ended up in the Red Lion. From an unprepossessing outside, the snug dining room was a real find. The lovely fire made the room toasty warm on a cold February day, and the décor was charming, as were the staff. I had roast lamb which was tender and delicious; my fiancé had a pizza (hand thrown by their Italian chef - you can even watch him throw the dough if you fancy) which was also very tasty. And the bill, including two drinks, came to just over £20. A real find and I'm sure we will return.

“Worth Looking Beyond The Tired Exterior”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

In the search for a late lunch, we ended up at The Red Lion. Pubs in this area are easily split between the 'new' (usually face lifted, chain pubs) and the 'old' pubs (more traditionally styled), and The Red Lion definitely falls into the 'old' category. Although attempts have been made to lift the front, I suspect many overlook this pub in favour of its glass-fronted neighbour, the Engine House. However, once over the threshold, this is a pub that has clearly undergone a thorough makeover but has still retained its character.
We found a table in the window, and ordered from the bar. The menu had a good selection, including the ubiquitous 2 meals deal, however I particularly liked that although it had all the old favourites, it also had some ideas of its own. As a keen burger enthusiast, I opted for the Jamaican Jerk burger, a step up front the basic but without bacon (if only more establishments realised that you don't need bacon for a better burger!). The food arrived after perhaps a longer wait than anticipated, however not too long. All nicely presented and very nice. The bar staff seemed pleasant though the server was a bit dour.
The biggest down point was the toilets. Situated upstairs, these are a cross between Australian outback and an attempt at opulent glamour, unfortunately succeeding at neither. The cubicle walls were graffitied, one tap was totally broken and the sink of another cracked. The hand dryer was woefully underpowered. Hopefully however the glimpse of the function room at the top of the stairs is enough for most people to forget their experiences in the bathroom. Closed off by a sliding door, left ajar to give a tantalising view, the function room looked very appealing. If I was after somewhere local for an event, this would definitely be on my short list.
Highly likely to return here in future, a pleasant pub with good food, particularly as it seems to have a permanent 'kids eat for £1' with every adult meal.

Thank you so much for your review, yes we are an independent and proud to be. We are in total agreement about the ladies they are are major downfall but the good news is we are having them refurbed in April which we are very excited about!
I'm glad you enjoyed your Jerk Burger its a popular choice, I'm sorry it took a little longer but we cook all our burgers fresh, from flavouring them to cooking them is all done on ordering. The function room is a popular space and we hire it for meetings and party for free just give us a call if you ever need a space. We hope to see you after our refurb,
Thanks
Emma
