“Quality accommodation and very dog friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2014

Stayed for 1 night with a chocolate lab...some local characters in the pub made it a very welcoming place.Room very clean, everything thought of but sadly no biscuits for the morning! However, placed in an ideal location, both dinner and breakfast were delicious and not over priced. Church bells a pleasure...lovely to hear.A wonderful location for walking and we will be back.

Stayed here for one night on a five day walking holiday.
The room was nicely furnished and comfortable.
Not unusually, the shower left a bit to be desired.
Didn't have dinner so can't comment, but the full English breakfast was excellent.

The George Hotel is a pub with 4 rooms. We stayed one night and our room was pretty, bright and clean with an extremely comfortable bed. There were plenty of towels and the small en-suite bathroom had a good shower and heated towel rail. We arrived mid-evening when the pub was in full swing and the bar staff were cheerful and helpful. I imagine it would be noisy if you were hoping for an early night but a pub's a pub so I think some noise goes with the territory. Really good breakfast the following morning (thanks Andrew). A nice stay in a place that provided what it said it would.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2014

We stayed 1 night in May and overall have mixed views on the stay.

1: The Premises

On arrival as others have said its a bit flat. More of a "oh right you're here" than a "Welcome to the George Hotel we hope you have a lovely stay". The pub itself is fairly big but the layout means you feel out of it as soon as you move away from the bar. The decor downstairs is a bit of a mix and although fine is not what you would call a nice country pub. The walls are bland and the tables and chairs mixed with pine chairs you buy with a cheap dinning set. Anyway that aside the pub serves food at reasonable prices and judging by the breakfast we had I can only imagine it to be good.

2: Rooms

The Rooms are accessed via an unmarked door to the left of the bar and up a small staircase to a landing where the room doors are. The rooms themselves are very nicely done especially for the price and have a full size hair dryer in the draw as well as a wardrobe dressing table with mirror, flat screen TV with Freeview, on-suite bathroom, towels, fan heater and basic tea coffee facilities. The bedding and towels in our room were immaculate and the bed comfy. All the sheets and towels were crisp white, in fact the whole room just felt clean.

The security in and of the rooms is simply a mortise lock so you must remember to lock it each time you enter or leave which is so easy forget if your not used to doing so. You don't want people in your room by accident whether you're in or out really! I cant for one moment imagine that you would get anything stolen in this place but you never know who else would be staying at the same time as you.

At night the pub obviously locks up and sets an alarm meaning that if you intend to get in late or get up before 7:30 then you need to use the alternative entrance and exit through the function room.

The rooms have paper thin walls and all the sounds of your neighbors travel extremely well so if you have a rowdy crowd staying as we did then it may wake you or keep you awake. That for me was not an issue though as I sleep well and stay up late.

The shower is OK its not very fast or powerful but was warm, however I imagine in the winter months it may be an issue because we had it on full power and maximum heat in May and it was only warm enough. Overall the bathrooms are of a good standard though and are certainly a nice feature of the rooms. PS: the rooms have a few small bars of soap and a tiny shampoo and conditioner enough for maybe two nights.

The heating in the rooms is done via a electric towel trail in the bathroom and a fan heater in the main room. I am not sure what the deal is here but the radiators are not in use as in, they have no water in them - I had a spanner - so I assume its either been made redundant or is at the moment drained down to allow repair. The Fan heater supplied was fine and quiet and was thermostatically controlled so you could set a temperature and leave it to maintain the room temp while you are out.

3: The Breakfast

Best breakfast I have ever had at a hotel of this price bracket. There is a table with small boxes of cereal - all good brands - to eat as you wish with milk and fresh orange juice. You are also asked if you would like tea or coffee, I went for Tea and received a nice big healthy pot of tea supplied with an even larger jug of milk, which is great if you want to use the whole teapot up. The English breakfast is very flexible and the normal is a bit of everything which for me resulted in a nicely cooked Fried Egg, Sausage, 2 Bacon, Mushrooms and Beans as well as 4 slices of thick bloomer type toast. Amazing Value I thought and the manger or owner was very obliging and courteous.

4: The Area

The town itself is quite small and has very little to do once you have looked around the fabulous church next door to the pub. There is a cash machine in walking distance and a local co-op mini market a couple of cafe's and chip shops. There is also another Pub which in my opinion is much nicer to sit in and is about 200 meters away from the George. Prices are slightly elevated from normal but will be good for southerners. Parking is good around the village but local areas seem to like to charge about £1.10 an hour in car parks.

Overall its a nice enough place to stay but there is not much to do in walking distance. The staff appear a bit standoffish but are in fact quite nice once they get talking. I hope this review helped you and if so please click the helpful button.

Happy holidays.

The George provides a chocolate box scene, being situated next to the 'Cathedral of the Peak' - -the beautiful Tideswell church. If you want to stay in an unspoilt rural location in the company of the 'locals' and a pint of good beer then the George fits the bill. It's not the normal concept of a hotel as there are only 4 rooms and the George seems to be the social centre of the village. We found things very much as described by the other recent reviews. Our room at the front enabled us to have a good idea of merrymaking in the bar below and I would therefore recommend a side room facing the church ( numbers 3 & 4 ? ). The breakfast was good, although there was no fruit or yoghurt offered - maybe we should have asked.
Overall I'd recommend the George to walkers, dog-owners, ale-lovers and couples seeking some authentic Peak character. The location is ideal for Chatsworth, Bakewell, Buxton, the Blue John Caves and Castleton. The huge church and the village itself are a bonus.

Room Tip: Ask for a side room facing the church.

Sadly have to agree with CW2402 about the welcome. I don't expect a fanfare and tickertape but a group of locals staring as if we had landed from Mars wasn't great.

The room was clean and comfortable, bed very comfy indeed. Central heating wasn't on despite it being chilly April. Fan heater available but noisy. Weak electric shower and nowhere in the bathroom to lay anything out. Noise from pub carried through the floor, quiet after closing but not a place for an early night.

Dinner in the pub was fine, average pub food, good portions and well priced. The breakfast was also OK and the fresh bread really nice. There was no ambience or warmth in the dining area of the pub either at dinner or breakfast. It all felt a bit unloved, like a country and western song, someone holding it together through bad times.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that isn't directly over the pub and the car park.

I'd booked a room in this hotel because I was working in the local area for a few days. The hotel itself is beautiful, as is the location. I was however a little disappointed with the welcome upon arrival. I arrived early evening and felt rather uncomfortable whilst checking in, the man that I spoke to was not particularly friendly, but was still very polite.

The room was fantastic with a very comfy bed, however iI did not get the best nights sleep.

Unfortunately, the room that I was in was positioned directly above the pub, and to the front of the building, and so I could hear the noise coming from boozy people downstairs. The windows are single glazing and so did very little to keep the noise out. In addition to this, on the second night of my stay here, I arrived back from a 12 hour day at work to discover that there was a rock concert going on outside my front window. The landlord allowed me to check out without paying for the second night, but I found it incredibly unhelpful that I had not been notified about this concert at the time of booking, and was left to find alternative accommodation at very short notice due to the noise.

Needless to say I checked out early on this occasion!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room which is not at the front of the property!!!
