“Relaxation and superb hosting”

my boyfriend and I have just enjoyed a thoroughly relaxing weekend in the bed and breakfast room at Oldfields Farm. The website looked fantastic and the reality was even better. Our bedroom was sumptuously comfortable with a very luxurious bathroom, jacuzzi bath and a shower that simply did everything! The owners Jan,Glyn and their delightful daughter Lydia were wonderful hosts and offered excellent recommendations of places to visit and eat. Breakfast was also delicious and set us up fantastically for our adventurous weekend quad biking and at Alton towers. I cannot fault the hospitality at Oldfields Farm. The location is a stones throw from Ashbourne and other larger places but nestled wonderfully within the stunning Derbyshire countryside. I am already planning our next trip - perhaps to stay in one of the incredible self catering cottages also on the Oldfields Farm site. Thank you very much for making our escape from the city a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

We chose Handels Muse from the internet as we liked the look of the website and we were not disappointed. The barn renovation has been beautifully and tastefully done and it had a good homely feel. It was well equipped with everything of the very best quality , we wanted for nothing. The scones and the yummy home made jam on arrival were wonderful ,just the thing after a days travel and the fresh raspberries for breakfast and a tot of sloe gin liqueur , were small touches that made us feel welcome during our stay.
This was our first visit to Derbyshire and the folder provided had a lot of good information . Jan was on hand to give us tips and advice about places to visit , and had lots of stories about the history of the area . Her pub and food suggestions were excellent, we just loved the quaint pubs with cask ale and good food. We loved the area around Oldfields farm and had a great weeks holiday.

We stayed at Oldfields Farm for our wedding anniversary and took our three month old daughter with us too. We stayed in Handels Muse, which is self catering and were so pleased with the standard of accommodation! Absolutely immaculate! Everything is thought of and provided, we even had roses and a card for our anniversary and the homemade scones were yummy! We found Oldfields Farm by chance on Google and glad we did.

We stayed at Oldfields Farm for a double celebration weekend: a birthday on the Friday, and our wedding anniversary on the Sunday. We came across Oldfields Farm by chance and were lucky enough to be able to stay in the farmhouse B&B room. Over the years we have stayed at dozens of guest houses, B&Bs and hotels up and down the country and, indeed, internationally.We can honestly say that this was the warmest and friendliest welcome we have ever had - not only from Glyn and Jan, but also from their charming daughter, Lydia, and Jan's characterful parents who were staying there at the time.

Nothing was too much trouble, and they went out of their way to make the weekend special:
- We arrived quite a bit later than planned, but a delightful bottle of Buck's Fizz was waiting to greet us;
- We had arrived too late for our afternoon cream tea, so it was prepared for us the next day:
- A table was booked for us at a local restaurant and we were offered a lift to the meal;
- Our room and breakfast table were decorated with hearts and flowers (and Love Hearts sweets) for our anniversary etc etc.

Breakfast was a delight; we could have ordered a cooked meal if we had preferred, but, at five courses, it was perfect. For example, we had Greek yoghurt with edible lavender, croissants, cereal, artisan breads/toast with home made preserves (the black currant jam was delicious) and fresh fruits. Wow! Breakfast times were flexible, and Jan didn't blink an eye when we asked for a 9:30 start on the Sunday, even though checkout time was 10:00. In fact we were still chatting to members of the family at 11:30. Their hospitality was second to none.

In addition to everything detailed above, there were wellies, binoculars, guide books and maps etc available if necessary, all at no charge.

Our room was large with dual aspect and the whole farmhouse, which had been renovated by Glyn and Jan over many years to an extremely high standard, was decorated and furnished with exquisite taste. The bed was extremely comfortable and the bedding was beautiful. The large bathroom had a jacuzzi and a separate power shower.

The farm is set in the glorious Derbyshire countryside. What a place. What a lovely family. Everything conspired to make our special weekend extra special.

We cannot understand the person who wrote under the name of "the occupier" who complained about not getting a cooked breakfast. Why didn't he just ask? Had he not read the information on the website? We can't understand why he was so critical after Glyn and Jan had pulled him out of the mire (putting it politely) when he had left the organisation of his wife's birthday celebration to the last minute. Had he forgotten, we wonder? And as for giving a score of 3/5 for value - unbelievable!

Room Tip: To feel part of the family, choose the farmhouse B&B room. If you prefer a more intimate setting...

Don't expect a cooked breakfast.

Now Jan puts on a nice morning spread. We had wild raspberries freshly picked at 6am that morning (Jan doesn't sleep!) and freshly baked bread which, if you are a lover of a continental style breakfast, is superb.

But considering she runs a Five Star B&B, one would expect the option of a fried egg and a couple of rasher of bacon (maybe a sausage)? After all, who's heard of a B&B that doesn't do cooked breakfasts?

What a great pity that the guests did not read our website with a little more care prior to making their reservation - a cooked breakfast was available for a small supplement using locally sourced ingredients and specially cured bacon at a neighbouring farm.
At no point during their stay was this ever mentioned nor asked for, but then again they seem not to have mentioned the fact that roses were sourced and provided for an otherwise forgotten birthday surprise for the lady. Coupled with our surprise birthday cake (with decorations) and glasses of bucks fizz (both gratis, we might add!) and the booking of several meals (alongside a subsequent cancellation thereof) we also offered free taxi services for the lady's special weekend. We are sincerely perplexed as to how we appear to not meet our guests' expectation of value in this case. We thank them for this feed-back but, put simply, how much more can we do?
Considering that the booking was made at 8am on the day of arrival after a sleepless non-stop overnight flight, we moved mountains to accommodate their numerous requests on all fronts, to such an extent that they wished to book a return visit for their anniversary two weeks later which we could not accommodate due to prior bookings. Sadly this is our worst review in 3 years of providing a first rate facility for our guests.
A HUGE thank you to those who value our 5 course breakfasts, we thoroughly (and humbly) appreciate all your comments.

We have just enjoyed a wonderful 2 days as guests of Jan, Glyn & Lydia (mummy's great little helper!). Our visit started with the warmest of welcomes to a home which has been lovingly created & enhanced with enough antiques for several 'Antiques Roadshows'. The location is idyllic, set in peaceful surroundings, the facilities are without peer & Jan's innovative breakfast creations reflect the care given to guests. Would love to return one day from our home in Australia & can unreservedly commend Oldfields Farm to any prospective guests.

Room Tip: We stayed in the B& B & enjoyed the experience.There are self catering options as well, but...

What a wonderful week we have just had! Having read excellent reviews about Oldfields Farm, I was very excited when Jan confirmed that Handel's Muse (their small converted donkey shed!) was available for the week. The farm is in a beautiful and very accessible location with plenty of parking space. We were able to store our bikes in Glyn's garage and were free to wander about the farm and orchard at our leisure.

Glyn and Jan are both warm and welcoming, clearly very proud of their property having invested their hearts and souls into the development. And so they should-it is impressive in every aspect, outside is traditional and pristine, inside is a successful balance of traditional features (wooden beams and windows) and modern decor and furnishings including a modern kitchen complete with everything from a washing machine to a bottle opener! There's also an array of maps, leaflets and books about the local area and even a decent pair of binoculars!

As well as all this, Jan's knowledge of local walks, markets and eateries helped us to plan our week with great success and we discovered places we'd never knew existed!

We wouldn't hesitate on recommending Oldfields to anyone and will return without a shadow of a doubt! Don't miss it!
