“Short Break in Derbyshire”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

The Plough Inn is located on the outskirts of Hathersage in north Derbyshire and is close to Ladybower reservoir and Hope valley which is the home of the "Blue John" mines. The accommodation was excellent with rooms situated across the courtyard from the Pub, and the rooms were of a high standard. The food offered in the Pub was excellent both at Breakfast and for Evening meals. The staff were also very attentive and nothing was too much trouble for them. I would definitely recommend The Plough for a short break due to its location and quality of accommodation & food

Cracking room, food was top notch and very reasonably priced and the setting is fantastic. If you can get good weather the beer garden and patio area is a great place to eat. The beers on tap are good too, a blonde ale from a local distillery and Leffe on tap. Nice. There is a good choice for breakfast and they are flexible on serving times if you have to leave early.

Room Tip: There is a reduced rate for rooms 48 hours before but you take the risk of them being booked up.

We've stayed here several times before and it has deteriorated significantly since our last stay four years ago. We stayed two nights and for the first night the place appeared to be unmanaged in stark contrast to our previous experience. We had booked one of their luxury rooms but the television didn't work and the response from behind the bar (the only member of staff I could find) was very unhelpful, almost dismissive. In the event a customer installed a television from another room some time mid-evening. The following day the original television had disappeared for repair but the replacement had been left disconnected. They have moved the bar since we were last here and this has the effect of turning the restaurant area into more of a bar meals space. We had booked the restaurant for both nights but checked we could eat in the bar if the restaurant was empty. We were therefore very surprised that the restaurant was not open and we were shown to a table in the bar. This is probably where we would have eaten anyway but feel we should have been told the restaurant would be closed when we booked it; just another sign of no obvious management. The food has become average at best and the wood and slate platters other reviewers have commented on are unpleasant. I ordered a bottle of wine and was astonished when it came decanted; I would have chosen another bottle had I known and, shockingly, I wasn't shown the bottle so it could have been anything. We'll probably find another place now which is a pity; this used to be good but no longer is.

Just back from a walking trip to the Peak District two nights of which were spent at the Plough. Me and my sister were very happy with our choice of this traditional hostelry. Our room in the main building was comfortable and clean and all of the staff were friendly and helpful. We couldn't fault the breakfasts, with fresh fruit, cereals and a great choice of cooked options. We had our evening meals from the excellent menu on both evenings and thoroughly enjoyed our selections.
The location was perfect for setting out on walks and we were provided with a good picnic too.
Highly recommended place to stay and eat.

I stayed at the Plough Inn for two nights and would certainly recommend it. The setting is beautiful, all the staff are helpful and friendly, the room was lovely and well decorated and the breakfast was fantastic. The pub has a lovely interior setting and the outside patio and garden are equally inviting.

I ate at the restaurant on both nights of my stay for connivence. The food is lovely and the wine list was fantastic. All though a bit pricer then other pubs I have been to I felt it was well worth it, but the food is also much better then what you would class as 'traditional pub grub'.

Hathersage is also ideally placed for trips to Chathsworth and Bakewell as well as numerous walks.

A fuss was made because we had not booked. 1.5 hours later only half the tables had been taken.
We were to share the starter yet the server did not know and we had to ask for two plates.
The veal was very chewey and after a great deal of effort my wife had to place it on the side of the plate.
We wanted to pay by credit card but no one told us the terminal would not work on the terrace.
Twenty minutes later we took the bill to the bar to then be informed of the fact.
Altogether a great disappointment even though the cost was for a much better meal and service.

We went to The Plough Restaurant with friends to celebrate a double near-birthday and had a very pleasant evening, although nothing exceptional. We were firest shown to a table which was very difficult to sit at - too many legs! But the staff were helpful and moved us on to a much better table. The food was good - well-cooked and tasty - as was the service - good (not tasty!) We and our friends would certainly go again.
