I'm not a member of YHA but whenever I stay in hostels about UK it's with them.
So, it is a sad point to mention that this place is probably the worse of all the YHAs I've stayed in. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't wholly bad or aweful - just not good.
Parking is bad, but then it's a tiny little place, so we didn't feel too put out by that. However, I did feel put out by being accused of "parking in front of the bins when we shouldn't" . . . we didn't.
Like someone else said, this place needs an facelift! Your soul seems sapped the moment you walk in - with the drab colours and ancient decour.
Only one shower worked for everyone in the main building and there were only two toilets.
As for our room - fine. There were three of us in a private room and the usual clean sheets were provided - thanks. What we didn't know, is that our room was right underneath the staff's quarters. So, coming back from the pub the first evening slightly pie eyed we soon earned ourselves a visit from "she who must be obeyed" from upstairs. This was in the form of the young female YHA worker whom we'd rudely awoken with our loud anticques. A Genuine mistake and before we'd opened our bedroom door to her knocking we were already apologising. However, said enraged worker decided to try and explain in not too derogatory methods why it is she needed sleep. Don't really think that was necessary. Still, eating humble pie, we cordially shut the hell up and went to sleep.
This delightful blossom and fine catch of a representative to the YHA ignored us (the males) from that point on. To the point of amusement.
We should have recognised the warning signs from the moment we arrived and she gave us her well seasoned and practised welcome/info speech when, mid way through we tried to lighten the banter with a few jokes. This earned us a subtle threat of "liability to damage and being arrested". Ah, bless - a teenager with a sense of humour failure.
So, over all, a pretty dire place to have stayed for the two nights. However, I'm not put off entirely by YHA as I know they do have better places and ones that are run by better people. But this time - awful!
Maybe it was just a bad timing . . .
pay extra and go to one of the many inns about the place
