“Lovely B & B in a superb setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2013

We booked this weekend at Bargate Cottage to celebrate our wedding anniversary ,it is run by a lovely couple Les and Fionna. The cottage itself is 16th century so it oozes character and charm.Bargate Cottage is situated in an ideal location in Castleton, lots of places to eat and drink and at this time of year Castleton's streets are full of Christmas trees covered in twinkling lights.A sight worth seeing.Breakfast was amazing, fruit ,cereals and a full English followed by toast and conserves what a start to the day.Only one thing spoiled it ,on second day guest who sat next to me continually coughed over me and my breakfast so unable to eat it which was a shame, but that was nothing to do with Fionna and Les but it was quite off putting .

Room Tip: The Pink room is lovely it has a four poster bed.

We had a rewarding and welcoming, restful 4 night break. Fiona our hostess is polite, cheerful and laid on the most scrumptious breakfast every morning. Our room was spotless and cleaned daily.
The local village provides a great variety of different venues for good evening meals and if you decide to either take a walking holiday or choose to go sightseeing by car the you won't be disappointed. The village itself provides such a wealth of activities to do from a ruined castle, to exploring caves, that you won't be disappointed.
We loved our break and will be back with Bargate Cottage again next year.

We arrived on the door step early and very wet but Fiona welcomed us and let us into our room. It was relief to be out of the weather and wet clothes. When the rain eased we were able to step into the middle of the village and explore. From the side of the cottage a track leads into a limestone gorge with the castle above. Breakfast is served at one time only (8:30) around a communal table so you meet the other guests. A good selection of fruit was followed by the full English breakfast which is served with variations depending on the day. There were some different jams on offer eg rhubarb

Esther and I had a wonderful stay here. Fiona was a lovely host. Our room was lovely with added little touches. Breakfast was to die for, we stayed for 5 days and I must admit I gave in at the end and had pouched eggs on toast the last 2 days stay. We had a good joke and a laugh around the breakfast table. It was lovely week and will come back. ( do I get a discount Ha Ha) Love to you From Esther and Rob.xxx

We stayed for one night on July 4th 2013 after our February booking for a room at Dunscar Farm had been lost and they had no rooms free, even though they had taken a deposit at that time. We were put in touch with Fiona at Bargate Cottage in town to see if she had a spare room and we were so pleased with the result. Fiona welcomed us in and put us in the Blue Room. Although a little tight it was a comfortable room and we slept well after our walk up Mam Tor that afternoon. Bargate Cottage is conveniently located in the town of Castleton very close to Peveril Castle and within easy reach of Mam Tor and many other local attractions in the Peak District. The town has 6 pub/restaurants so there is plenty of choice for lunch and/or dinner. We have lived in Arizona, USA now for 20 years so the breakfast in the morning was great, our first real English Breakfast on our tour of England. Parking outside Bargate Cottage is a little tight but well managed by Fiona so we had no issues. We would highly recommend this B& B to anyone and will very likely come and stay again another year.

My wife and I decided to take a walking tour and Bargate Cottage was our second destination. What a lovely place!! Ideally located to explore the Peak District. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the breakfast is the best! Fiona is a fabulous cook, she prepares those "english Breakfasts" like no other! You just have to try her oatmeal with Bailey's Irish Cream!!
There are many B&B but as we all know it's always the people who make the difference. Fiona is what makes Bargate Cottage so unique!
Thank you Fiona for your lovely smile, your outgoing personality and your wonderful hospitality!
We wish Montreal Canada were not so far away as we could go visit more often!
Thank you again!

We stayed for 3 nights in September 2013 having read the reviews on tripadvisor prior to booking.
The stay was superb. The room was comfortable and clean and we could come and go as we pleased with our own key. Parking was good out the front, but a bit tight if the rooms are all booked, but well managed!
Breakfasts were superb. Fiona is an excellent ccok and host, and breakfast with all at one large table at 8.30 worked a treat and any adverse comments regarding sitting down all together at a set time are only a problem if you are a miserable so snd so in the mornings!
Lots of nice touches like sweets in the room, bowl full of toiletaries in case you forget anything and a treat when you leave.
Most other guests all seemed to have returned time and time again which really says something about the place.
When we return we will certainly be going back to Bargate as well - no need to look anywhere else!
