“Great if your a carnivore, but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

Four of us went today, me being the only veggie. Two had burgers and said they were good - interesting buns, nice side salad, delicious burgers (I'm told), my sister had the bagel which looked good with bacon that didn't look like your bog standard supermarket stuff (local butcher maybe?). But I'm afraid the so called 'spicy bean burger' was very very disappointing. I know shop-bought burgers well and this was at the cheap and tasteless end of the range and this one was rubbery and charred to boot. To give the owners credit, they were happy to make me another but I realised that I just didn't want the burger, even if it was better cooked. It's a real shame that they don't seem to have put the time and energy into sourcing a really good veggie burger they way they seem to have done with their meat burgers. They get four stars because most of the food was good, the place nice and clean and they dealt with my complaint well. Just please please please ditch those nasty burgers (wonder if the owners have actually tried one?)

“america in the countryside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

Visited a few days ago with friends. It is a nice alternative if you dont want the usual pubs and tea rooms in a country village. The food was lovely. Good prices, great portions, friendly staff and prices were reasonable. Having eaten in authentic american diners in the states this wasnt far off. The burgers were clearly "home made" and a decent size. The special milkshakes, although more expensive, were divine. Will definately be going again and telling all of my friends!

“Buddy's - My New Favorite!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

Visited Buddy's a couple of weekends ago and love love loved it! Something totally different from the usual nana-tea-shops in the Hope Valley. Good for people spotting, fun atmosphere, friendly staff and quick service. The place looked spotless and the food was mega filling. Some guy was attempting the Buddy's challenge which appeared to be a monster sized burger with all the trimmings, and he failed miserably!! Will be visiting again this week with friends and have been spreading the word about this place. If you want a boring old fossil-fest café, then I wouldn't bother with Buddy's but if you want well priced, filling food in a fun, unusual, clean and friendly environment then Buddy's is the stand out place around here.

“Close, but not close enough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

Went in on a Sunday just after lunch time to try out what for us is a local eatery. The decor is most of the way to a US diner (yes, we have eaten in one in the US) - booths in the window, side bar with stools and a few tables at the back. The Grease soundtrack on the music system, waitresses made up to look like one of The Pink Ladies, appropriate diner style menu, burgers, chilli dogs, ice cream floats & milkshakes, etc etc. We both had burgers, mine was a Buddy's burger, with a shared side of curly fries & onion rings. Portion sizes were good although the side salad was a bit tokenistic, more than enough fries for two to share, enough onion rings for about 10 people! Generally tasty food cooked fresh and served promptly.

However after a few minutes of repeated Grease tracks on the audible but not quite clear music system, further observation left us feeling that with just a little more effort, the place could be 'hopping' rather than a bit 'guess so'. We couldn't really put our finger on it, but it felt like a sort-of replica of a diner. Perhaps best suited to take a bunch of young teenagers.

“Nothing wrong but nothing particularly right either”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

An American style diner in Castleton is a strange choice but it looks well done as you walk in, enough to tempt you to sit down. But as is often the case the toilets appear to be an after-thought, all clean but really shabby and untidy. And this tells you everything you need to know, because if the attention to detail is lacking here then it's probably also lacking when it comes to other things - like the quality of the ingredients.
So buddy's is a case of all show and little go with average catering style burgers, hot-dogs and fries at average prices. Nothing that wrong but also absolutely no reason to go back or recommend it to others. Get rid of all the Americana, serve a really good burger in a simple cafe style, and concentrate on getting all the little things right.
