My wife and I took advantage of a Living Social deal at the Lion and plumbed for the 2 night option.
We cannot praise the staff highly enough. From the first cheerful greeting from the young man at reception (he should be part of the management team!) to the room maid offering to assist with our bags when leaving, they were all friendly, helpful and efficient.
Upon arriving it was evident that there was a wedding reception underway but we were treated as if we were the only people there. When asked if we would like to dine that evening (and unexpectedly told that our deal included a £20 food allowance!) the young man's face showed slight relief when we said we were happy to dine on the second evening (we subsequently learned that as well as the wedding reception the chefs had to cater for a large private dining function!). We were directed to our room (of which more later) and again we were offered assistance with our bags,
When we returned to the hotel after dinning out we were offered sincere (and I believe they were sincere) apologies for the noise of the wedding disco and were informed that he had looked at the possibility of relocating us but without success. Unfortunately our room was pretty much directly above where the sound system was located and it did feel as if were were at the party! We were philosophical about this (it was somebody's wedding after all) and the tracks being played suited us so we sang along until they stopped, which was just after midnight! Had we needed to rise early or had we had children with us we may have been a little less understanding!
Breakfast consisted of cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit and the usual cooked offerings and was more than acceptable, although better on the second, quieter, day. On both occasions it was served cheerfully and efficiently.
We ate at the hotel on the Sunday evening. The menu could not be called extensive (about half a dozen choices for each course) but there is a fair selection and all the food we had was delicious and well presented. My wife decided on a second started as her main course and this was absolutely no problem.
Now for the negatives!
The fact that the Lion's official title is The Lion Pub with Rooms indicates that the accommodation side of the business maybe does not have full attention of the group management and this unfortunately shows in the lack of investment in the hotel rooms. Our room was, to say the least, looking tired! There were no pictures or artwork anywhere, the decor was decidedly dark, drab and in places damaged and the fixtures and fittings certainly needed attention (a loose wardrobe door, curtains not hung adequately, the shower all but useless etc). There were stains on the decorative bed adornments (the cushion and whatever they call that strip of fabric across the bottom of the bed!). The bathroom was basic.
Having said that, the actual bed linen and towels were spotless and the bed was very comfortable. Unfortunately we were disturbed by the banging of what we assumed to be the kitchen door from about 6.45am - this we did bring to the attention of the receptionist as I'm sure a handyman (or the manager) with a screwdriver could adjust the spring
From what I could ascertain the parent company hold the purse strings and for some reason known only to themselves they seem to be too shortsighted to put any investment into the bedrooms leaving the local management to struggle to keep things ticking over out of petty cash. This is such a pity as they have a great asset in the team there, the food is excellent and the atmosphere is welcoming but for some this will not be enough and in this day and age it is not unreasonable to expect better standards of decor and maintenance.

Dear Guest, thank you so much for your review. With all the positives and the negatives I really can't argue with any points. I am pleased you have pointed out areas that you were pleased with, I will relay these points to all staff at our next team meeting. I am sure they will be pleased at your positive comments.. Richard on reception did let me know that he had asked you if you minded your dinner on the Sunday; I hope this was okay with yourselves and that it did not upset your stay so much.

We also endeavour to move residents around when we have weddings and normally the whole hotel does get booked up by the wedding party, however on this occasion it wasn't possible to please everybody. To that I do apologise.
The rest of your review will get pointed out at the next board meeting where these points will get noted.
Thank you once again for your review. All comments are appreciated and accepted.
Kind regards, Wayne Taylor.
