My partner and I went to this cafe early afternoon for a scone and drink. We had never been before, although we live locally, but decided to try it out. We were encouraged by the fact that it advertises itself as the Derbyshire Food & Drink Cafe of the Year 2011.
The cafe is situated up a very steep set of stairs which would present problems for elderly people or anyone with restricted mobility.
The cafe itself is set within a white loft area. There is a selection of art on the walls. It is the sort of place where you find yourself speaking in hushed tones as there is no atmosphere , and when you look around you find other customers doing the same.
There is no music or any kind of sound which could possibly make the place welcoming.
We had a cream scone and a cheese scone which were quite nice, but certainly not the best we have tasted locally.
There were two girls waiting on the tables who were proficient, but somehow lacked any kind of personality to make you feel truly welcome.
I have to say that we usually go to the lovely cafe in Bennetts department store which is a stones throw away from this place, and its there that I think we will be returning to next week.
To sum up---there's nothing drastically wrong with this place, it just needs an injection of soul, personality and a little bit of umphh!!!!!
