My wife and I stayed a night at the Okeover and were impressed by the quality of the food and warmed by the friendliness and informality of the welcome. The pub is very conveniently placed for Dovedale and other beauty spots. It is situated on one of the smaller roads out of Ashbourne, a vigorous walk to the town centre or 5-10 min drive. Lovely views from bar and bedroom. Our room was a comfortably large double with a huge bed, not dripping with luxury trappings but comfortable and spotless.
What sets thie Okeover apart is the quality of the cooking on offer in the restaurant, My pork belly and black pudding in apple gravy and my wife's locally-sourced sausages were both amazingly good and served in huge portions. The food on neighbouring tables looked as good, and as overflowing. The "pub" is dominated by the restaurant and is bright and plainly decorated, not designed for people on their first date or a proposal. The only serious negative is that they need to improve the quality and variety of their wines - the food deserves better,
The room was good value, and the food was excellent value.
It is family run, and the family are charming. They are working their socks off without being obvious about it,and are obligingand helpful. We can recomend it without reservation.
