“Best value food in town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Visited here a few times & have tried various items from the menu and I must say it is the best food & value in town, Try their fillet steaks.... beautifully cooked. A must is their Balmoral Chicken, with a Scottish twist. The Vegetarian Brie & beetroom pie is lovely, The staff are very friendly and will try to accomodate you even during busy periods. Booking is advisable as it is very popular

“A pleasant meal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

This pub/restaurant is obviously popular with the locals, as when we were there all of the tables in the dining room and most of those in the lounge bar were taken. We had Balmoral chicken and a beef lasagne (which came with garlic bread and salad). The salad was a bit more leafy than I would have liked and needed some cutting up - difficult with the lasagne dish on the plate. It was also a little lacking in dressing. That was a minor point, however, as the main parts of the meal were lovely.
Service was a little on the slow side - but they were busy - and the dining room was cold - it was only 2 degrees outside, so again, it was understandable. The meals, with a couple of soft drinks, came to about £20, which wasn't bad for the quality.
I'd definitely go back, but either on a warmer day or with a substantial jumper on!

“Best pub lunch in a long time.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013 via mobile

Visited Easter weekend and pleased that I did. Service was pleasant with a smile. Food was very good and menu was varied. The atmosphere was pleasing and I just wish every town had one of these pub/restaurants. Meal was appropriately priced. Would visit again.

“Good food and service. Everything we wanted and more!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

For a Wednesday night the The Bowling Green was very busy in both the lounge and public bars.

This was our second visit as the previous Sunday we'd been for a drink and had been impressed by our warm welcome. The return trip was to eat and we chose two steaks and a cheeseburger with trimmings.

Due to all tables being either occupied or reserved in the lounge bar we placed our order and moved to the public bar where there were several tables to eat at. Halfway through our second game of dominos we were delighted to be served our meals. The steaks were excellent and cooked to order. The staff were (as usual) attentive, friendly and relaxed: they provided us with what we wanted and without drama! The other customers were also very pleasant and welcoming.

How nice to be given such a warm welcome with tasty food and a great pint of Pedigree in relaxed, convivial surroundings.

Unfortunately we don't live locally but The Bowling Green Inn will be one place we'll definitely be returning to next time we're in Ashbourne.

“Mega munch at not mega prices”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

Up the hill and away from the centre of Ashbourne, this pub is a bit of a gem.
The portions are enormous and really tasty - I had a haggis and black pudding stack for starters followed by the shortcrust-clad steak, potato and (doombar) ale pie. I couldn't finish the latter as the starter was a beast, and suffice to say that, despite eating at 4pm, I didn't eat again that day!
Despite the fact that we were eating at an awkward time, the waiting staff were really friendly and attentive, and food came from the kitchen in a very timely fashion. For me, the best thing about this place was its chips: real home-cooked chip-pan chips that probably kill men at 10 paces but taste delish! The only other pub I know of in the county serving such chippy goodness is The Poet's Corner in Ashover.
We will definately be going back with friends and family in the not too distant future
