“Spooky Weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

First time stay with wife and 2 children 5 and 3 years, we visited on recommendation for the fancy dress Halloween party. Found the site extremely clean litter pickers out during the day, facilities more than adequate despite reviews, the site seemed quite full with most pitches taken so the Halloween ball was a bit on the crammed side no seating available. Everyone seemed up for fancy dress and caravans all trimmed up, kids loved it. Let down by one incident of poor customer service we broke an ice cream cone and on asking for a replacement we were charged £1.65 for just the cone!! Minor gripe but its that negative experience that will be mentioned every time we speak or are asked about Callow Top. I know that if it was my business I would have said here have a 3 pence cone for free and know that you had ensured the customer was bowled over with your generosity rather than thinking you were a Highway man outfit!! .

it was 8pm when we arrived at the site . Never been before, My husband paid for our pitch. Then we were given a camp site map with a pen mark line on telling us where to go. It was so wet ,windy and dark. VERY poor lighting. Could not see where we were going. NO one came out to show us where to go. We ended up ringing the help number. A man answered but could not help us. He had to get someone else . A woman came to the phone .She came across very off with us because we ended up in the wrong field. When we got to our pitch it was like a mud bath. Not happy. how this site is in the top 100 I will never know. the only helpful people on site were the toilet cleaners Also there is no one looking after the children. We went for a walk and a. child on a scooter came out from nowhere and ran straight into us, children seem to be able to do what they want on this site. ;(

I camped here a week ago after a few nights wild cycle camping round the peaks. It was a great place to get cleaned up and relax before the long cycle home. The showers were fine and for 60p you get a nice, long soak. They have their own supermarket which has pretty much all you need. Rather than break open the trangia stove again I treated myself to a meal in the cafe and washed it down with a pint of their doombar. The food was pub grub and I expected nothing more and got nothing less. Due to it being a Monday and out of school holiday season I had the place pretty much to myself, which I enjoyed but I can imagine at peak times it would get a little busy.

If you're cycling there find the entrance off the Tissington Trail as the main entance off the Buxton road leads to a wee incline the like of which I haven't cycled since attempting the world's steepest road in New Zealand.

Happy camping

facilities like the shower and toilet block weren't great, having to put 20p in for every couple of minutes in the shower, or to use the hair dryer or even to plug in your own hairdryer is a bit of an old age concept. can't tell you how many 20ps lost in the dryers when they didn't work properly. showers a bit shabby, toilets fine. site itself very well kept but shame designed in such a way that hard standings for caravans are closer to the toilet blocks than the tent pitches. lucky caravan owners dont have to walk 300 yards to get to the bog at 3am in the morning...

This was our second visit to Callow Top, the first being to use it as a base for days in the Peak District and I would agree with other contributors that standards have slipped. Staff continue to be friendly and helpful but the general cleanliness of the site has deteriorated. On this occasion we visited in the peak period and took our grandchildren with us. Obviously there were many more children around at this time, but it did appear that the site was being over run by them. There was a problem in the pool with older children using inflatables, even though they were supposed to be prohibited and there was a constant threat of being run over by the many bicycles on site. In my opinion there should be more visible staff on the site to ensure that rules are not broken. In particular they should ensure that teenagers are not allowed to congregate in large groups in the amusement areas and make it almost impossible for others to use the facilities and that excessive noise, which goes on past the noise curfew, is controlled. We used the cafe to eat once but would not recommend it as prices are extortionate and quality is very poor. The site is situated in a beautiful location, close to many wonderful places to visit, however, we will definitely not be going again as a couple in the peak period.

just had weekend at callow top lovely child friendly site , i cant comment on some of bad reviews as it wasnt peak season , everything on site was clean and tidy , great play area for kids , with bike hire too if they get boared of that , nice pool , i didnt eat in cafe or pub , but on reflection the cafe prices for food was very steep , £6.50 for jacket spud !!! , only gripe i had was very large site ,with nowhere near enough showers and toilets ,also lack of water taps ,we were in field five which is a very large field and there wasnt a single tap in that field, also i would say they need more rubbish areas , as only 1 point for the whole site , but i will be going back , but not in peak season , kids loved it and if there happy adults are happy too

Just back from 6 nights at Callow Top. We returned this year as we loved it so much last year. Its a great location, good size pitches, lovely wildlife and very green.
All I can say is what a difference a year makes!
This year the toilet block and showers were dirty even after the cleaners had been in, most of the time they just seemed to change bin bags and move the wet floor sign to a different position. There was even "poo" on the tiles in the ladies which remained all week even after reporting it. We never smelt any cleaning products except just before we left in the tent field toilets, this was probably because they were about to close till the following weekend.
At least we had a great time together.
