Myself, my husband, two boys aged 4 and 6 months and my brother, his wife and bump booked a midweek stay at Howbeck Lodge. We arrived and were met by John who directed us to our tent and showed us the showers, honesty shop and how to light the wood burning stove. John left us to settle in and told us that our meal of lamb tagine cooked by wife Christine that we had pre ordered would be delivered to our tent at 6pm. Our tent was amazing just like in the brochure everything was spotless and the beds and duvets were so warm and comfy. Our meal arrived on the back of John's quad bike and we were not dissapointed it was delicious and plenty for the five of us with enough left over of seconds. I would definitely recommend pre ordering a meal for the first night it was a godsend as it allowed us to unpack and settle in without worrying what to do for tea. That first evening with the lanterns lit and everyone around the fire drinking hot chocolate really was special.
We awoke on our first morning to birds singing, the trickling of the stream that was right beside our tent and the cows mooing - perfect! We went to collect our freshly laid eggs from the chicken coop for breakfast and I can honestly say they were the best scrambled eggs I've had. Farmer John as my 4 year old affectionately called him came to give us a tour of the farm on his quad bike and trailer one of the highlights for Jacob who squealed with excitement as we drove all over the farm. We saw the pigs and the 7 piglets, cows and the newborn calf born the previous day, lambs, Ireland cows, Topper the horse, goats and Rabbits.
The following day we visited Keswick which is a lovely town with lots of gift shops, pubs, markets, a great park area and Derwent water where we went on a 50 minute cruise around the lake which the boys loved. On our return we were greeted by John who asked Jacob if he wanted to feed the lambs who jumped at the chance. He loved it and what an experience for him!
Jacob loved the outdoor life and never once said he missed the television he was far too busy either playing football, fishing in the stream, exploring the farm or flying his kite! We visited the farm offpeak so there were only 2 other tents occupied but I imagine it would be great during the busier times as the kids can make friends and play together.
On one of the evenings John lit the big clay oven outside to cook us all homemade pizzas that were lovely. We ate with the other families that were there which gave us the opportunity to meet everyone.
On our last day John came to our tent and asked Jacob if he would like a ride on his tractor and another ride on his trailer. The look on his face was priceless and can honestly say I have not seen him so excited in a long time.
I cannot recommend Howbeck enough the hospitality showed to us by John & Christine was exceptional and the facilities are first class with the hot powerful showers and the added luxury of a hairdryer! John went out of his way to ensure the kids had a great time and experienced life on a working farm, his enthusiasm for his job and patience with the kids was fantastic he made our holiday what it was and they work so hard they deserve every sucess that comes their way. We will definitely be back and cant wait for our youngest son to experience the magic of Howbeck and my brother & sister in law cant wait to bring along their new addition for you to meet! Thank you John & Christine for making our stay so enjoyable and for some very special memories...
