“Friendly Refuge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

This was the third time in just over year me and two friends have stayed here. It really is a fantastic location with second to none walks and views. We tend to go out of season and find that £60 for B+B is very good value. I love the feel of the place and it's history. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and comfortable and have ample tea and coffee making facilities with a good choice. The full English breakfast is a filler plus there are plenty of other options too. I stayed in a room with a shower only. There is a notice that because it is their own water supply the pressure might be insufficient. The drawback to that was the electric shower either produced scalding hot or freezing cold water and nothing in between. The size of the shower cubicle is small too, so be warned. Saying that due to the age of the building I can accept the restricted area. The bed was very comfy and a good sleep was had. The original features of the entrance and residents area make a trip to this place worthwhile. Supping several pints of Haystack after a good days walk makes it something else. The menu is varied enough to give people an adequate choice and has good tasty portions. If you want fine dining go elsewhere. This is a walkers place out in the sticks and it succeeds in providing a welcoming refuge after a day tramping some of the best scenery you can imagine

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a bath. The showers are temperamental.

The trip advisor options are a bit limited and if THEY read this I want to comment on car hire companies.
Anyway the Wasdale Inn. Set at the end of a staggeringly beautiful valley that was voted Britain's favourite view a few years ago, I was camping on their site right opposite the Inn. The bar food in 'Ritsons' was really very good but get there early because it sells out quickly as the camp ground is popular with those ascending Scafell Pike the next morning and they want a good meal.
There's an extensive selection of local beers all well worth trying.
I can't comment on the Inn's accommodation but I believe you really have to put the place into the context of where it is, surrounded by wonderful scenery. So even if you might not be entirely pleased with your room your disappointment must surely be tempered by the setting in which you find yourself when you step of the door and survey the grandeur all around.
Go there and be amazed as I am every time I go.

We spent last weekend at the Wasdale Head Inn and had a really lovely time

The last 2 reviews I think are completely unreasonable. What do people want? The clue is in the name, this is an "Inn" miles from anywhere, not a 5 star city hotel. It is in an incredibly beautiful spot with no competition so yes, its not the cheapest but for us it ticked all the boxes

Beautiful location with immediate access to good walking -Sca fell, Great Gable etc
Clean room with a comfortable bed and proper linen sheets
Clean bathroom with lots of hot water
Friendly, happy staff
Excellent beers
Delicious, simple home cooked food ( try the Wasdale Lamb Tattie Pie)
Decent Coffee with breakfast

The inn was incredibly busy while we were there yet the service continued to a very high standard.

We were lucky to drop into a cancellation but our room away from the main inn had disadvantages of cars parked all around and people walking past so we had little privacy and it was noisy from the room above

We will be back, for sure, and we were proudly shown the inn rooms so we can choose a room in the main building next time

Very highly recommended if you want a country inn with very high standards rather than a flashy, modern hotel

Room Tip: In the inn

Looked at objectively, this hotel is overpriced for the facilities. The owners have done their best to bring the very old infrastructure up to 21st century expectations, but there are inevitable compromises. Our room was small, only room for one chair so one of us had to sit on the bed, a standard double rather than the king size you would normally expect. Sound insulation was such that we could clearly hear next door's conversation. However it was clean, well maintained with excellent bathroom facilities.

But you don't go to Wasdale Head for the quality of the bed. I suspect like most people who have walked in Wasdale, I have always wanted to spend a night here, and a short break before a major operation gave the opportunity. To wake in the morning and watch the swallows wheeling in front of the window, with Yewbarrow looming up to the right and Illgill Head above the screes is one of those memories that will last for ever. The Abrahams photographs and other artefacts show the hotel's place in the early history of British climbing.

We had an excellent meal in the restaurant - my steak was the tastiest I have eaten for many a year, and the staff were all pleasant and helpful. Only you can decide whether the steep room rate is justified by the location and atmosphere - it was for me.

While we stayed at Burnthwaite Farm B & B we did make use of Ritson's Bar for our evening meals.

It is an interesting space. The tables front and centre of the bar and kitchen are odd. They need a bit of attention, are cramped for 4 people to sit at and one gets an unnecessary view of the kitchen. Kind of like a bad café setup and out of context for the rest of the pub. But they were the only ones available when we arrived and were very hungry so we sat there. The food was pretty good. If this had been our only experience here we would have been disappointed.

Once a table freed up in the room to the back of the pub (the one with the upper level bar display), we moved there and it was a totally different experience. This was a space that one would expect in a historic country pub. Scored one of the booth tables and we loved the rest of our evening at Ritson's playing cards and enjoying the atmosphere of this room. Great historic photos. After a challenging day on the hills the next day we made our way back to this same room and had another nice evening.

The shop outside the pub has everything one needs for hiking. Great little shop.

All in all we enjoyed Ritson's Bar and would easily go back but honestly, if I can offer my two bits, please work a bit on that set up near the bar. It could do with a bit of TLC. Thank you.

We stayed for two nights to enable us to walk up Scafell Pike. We had a wonderful cooked breakfast to fuel us for the walk served by helpful and friendly staff. On our return went back to our room which was one situated in converted outbuilding and had nap on comfotable bed. The only problem with the room was that we had rather noisy neighbours upstairs who seemed to clomp around at all times!
We had dinner in the restaurant where we were fitted in at short notice as we had forgotten to book. We had two courses which were lovely and the fresh bread rolls were gorgeous. A lovely place to stay in the mountains.

What a fantastic place. Unfortunately only there for one night but can’t wait to return. Sue was friendly and welcoming to all guests. The residents bar & lounge were delightful. The restaurant was not open (Monday) and we ate in the public bar. Excellent pub food – nothing to complain or gripe about. The breakfast was tasty and hearty . We stayed in the garden room which had a door to a small outdoor area with wonderful views. Heating was available if required- radiators & additional fan heater.
