We visited a few pubs in the village during each day of our stay to get a feel as to whether to return later in the evening to eat. With four of us with an combined spend of approximately £70-80 for each meal, we were looking forward to the typical Cumbrian welcome and decent, honest food. We were pleased to say that we not not disappointed with the Manor House.
We walked in at about midday to find about 10 people in the pub, with over half being locals. We checked with the member of staff on duty to see if we could come in with our two small dogs. We were welcomed into the public bar or a tidy beer garden in the back.
Food was served between midday and 2 o'clock and we were immediately made welcome by the staff and locals sitting inside. The lunch menu was simple, but varied. We ate the ploughman's, tuna bagette and the black pudding stack. All were substantial and well cooked.
Because of the warm welcome and decent food, we returned the following evening to find a busy pub, with a nice mix of locals (including some returning from football training - a pub team?) and holidaymakers. The public bar was packed, but was separate from the eating area and the same member of staff from the previous day was serving. Although some extra staff could have been on duty behind the bar, nobody complained. Everyone appreciated that she was friendly and working hard to serve everyone. This was an attitude that created a relaxed and warm atmosphere. She always had time to talk to everyone whilst she was working.
We tried the mixed meat starter (local salami and ham), meat pie, potatoes/chips and vegetables and the sticky toffee pudding. You could immediately tell that all was home made on the premises. The waiting staff worked hard, but always with a smile. The bill was reasonable and a little tip for anyone visiting the area - if you eat there and need to pay by card, they also provide cashback with no charge (better than those cash machines that charge you).
We cannot review the hotel facilities, but we can certainly recommend this pub for cleanliness, friendly staff and good honest food. The only constructive feedback was that a few of the local ales were unavailable whilst we were there.
