“Good food and great service - one major issue”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

Stayed locally and ate at hotel twice in last week once for lunch and because this was so good went for dinner a few days later.

Bar staff and waitresses all particularly welcoming and attentive. Menu reasonable and excellent portions. Food tasty and this would have been a four or possibly five star review if the following issue hadn't been witnessed. When paying a call of nature before leaving, I was washing my hands when the chef came out of the toilet cubicle and instead of washing his hands walked straight out of the toilets and back to the kitchen. To think that we had just eaten a meal prepared by him made me feel ill, and goodness knows what a health inspector would have made of it. As we had already paid, decided to let matter rest, however, the more I thought of the matter, the more appalled I felt.

Basic cleanliness should be a given in any establishment and I would hope that this was a one off incident.

The Chefs have a special hand wash area with Antibacterial Soap for their use located at the entrance to the kitchen. This could have been explained at the time and caused you less concern. However, your comments have been noted. Thankyou.

As locals we are pleased that the Greyhound has re-opened and is serving really good meals again and still has a dog friendly policy in the bar. We had an excellent meal with very good service and can highly recommend the hotel both as a pub and a good restaurant.

We stayed here for just one night on our coast to coast walk arriving after a gruelling wet day. We could not have been made more welcome. Our bedroom was enormous and beautifully appointed with a bath! which was just what we needed. Our clothes were dried and we enjoyed an excellent meal. Highly recommended.

I have just had the best accommodation so far the hospitality of the staff and owner of this establishment was fantastic. The food was outstanding especially for a walker on the coast to coast. I would recommend the Greyhound to all who care to listen. Well done Greyhound staff.

We were pleased that the greyhound has reopened and were looking forward to trying it again. The staff were nice. The new tables and chairs in the dining room are much better than before. And the toilets are part way (I hope) through being updated which is about time! The starter I had was lovely but the roast dinner was a terrible let down. The meat and gravy were nice but everything else was not. Cold veg, dull brown coloured suede, carrot and cabbage. Roast potatoes that dudn't seem to have seen any fat and the strangest textured Yorkshire pudding. One of us had steak pie and chips and enjoyed it, however. We complained about the veg and this was handled very well by the manageress who offered us coffee on the house. They need to improve on the food overall, there are so few places in shap and if they got it right, they could have a gold mine, especially with the locals when the tourists have gone home. Come on staff, lets see some decent cooking standards and, waitresses, don't serve the food if you wouldn't want to eat it yourselves!

Our stay was excellent the staff where very friendly and helpful they could not do enough for you to make your stay very pleasant.
Food was all cooked by Chris the chef and the menus where magnificent with a lot of choices so we where able to have some thing different every night.
Breakfast where very good with a nice selection to choose from, although grapefruit segments would be nice The rooms were nice clean tidy and very nice to stay in. Very well presented ,also very comfortable nights sleep..
The Greyhound is very dog friendly we where allowed to let our two dogs stay under the table when we there in both the bar and in the bar eating area. but not the restaurant.
We have been recommending the Greyhound to our friends for both a place to stay and to go e for a meal.
We will certainly be staying there again and going there for a meal.
very well done to all the staff for a very nice happy time with you.
From 3-8-2013 to 12-8-2013.
Thanks to Julie,Chris , Jane and all the staff.

As we were staying in a B&B in Shap on our Coast to Coast walk, we eat here as it was by far the most convenient. It was mid week so the place, which is large had only a few customers. A good selection of cask ales, which of those tasted, all were in good condition. Serving six ales in a pub without the turnover is difficult, but they seem to have it right.

The service was excellent, although not all of the wide choice of menu was available. Although I thought the lamb I was served wasn't great, my friends thought their choices were good or very good. For the latter, I have raise the score from average to very good. I understand that at the time of or visit, it had only been reopened a couple of weeks.
