We arrived here late after an extremely stressful journey in a party that included two disabled elderly people and a toddler and the place couldn't have been more welcome. The Pennington combines two very rare qualities; world-class service and amenities with local charm and friendliness. The hotel itself is very clean and well-appointed with large bedrooms and bathrooms and very comfortable beds. The food is not superlatively good by capital city standards but is decent, hearty fare and served quickly and with attention to detail.
But what really made it was the staff and their friendliness and helpfulness. They bent over backwards to make us feel welcome and to de-stress our stay. When my elderly and infirm parents arrived one of the receptionists, seeing that my mother was having difficulty walking, immediately and without prompting, moved them into a ground-floor room with a walk-in shower and various other disabled facilities. They were also extremely calm and unflappable when my two-year old played up during a late dinner and every single person who served us did so with warmth and politeness.
It wasn't cheap, and particularly considering where it is, but I would happily pay again for such good service. Overall, this is a gem of a place which comes highly recommended to anyone who is walking or visiting in the Lake District.
