“Welcome relief on a rainy day!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012 via mobile

Friendly staff, food excellent and real ale kept well. We ordered the soup of the day after 5 minutes, the staff politely informed they had run out of leek soup , however, would mushroom be okay; absolutely delicious!

A warm friendly atmosphere, would recommend to friends!

We have been there twice for a lunch. Both meals were tasty, especially mix of homemade cheeses was really unforgettable. Beautiful location, outside sitting, friendly atmosphere. I can recommend to everybody.

In a quiet beautiful location with planty of walks from the door. Very friendly helpful staff. Excellent choice on menu. Nice room. All in all a very pleasant week ; apart from the weather .... but the drying room was well used.

We stayed 2 nights, a group of 7, and walked out from the hotel both days. Useful drying room used after impromptu dip in local peaty pool. 50 malt whiskey selection. £200 a head all in for 2 nights accommodation, dinner, breakfast, packed lunch, night caps etc. A friendly place, not too busy.

It was quite busy when we stopped at the Three Shires Inn for some lunch, but the food and drink was good and the staff were friendly and helpful. It's a beautiful area, although I found the narrow road quite nerve-wracking when driving up! Well worth the trip, though.

The Three Shires provided us with a perfect location for a two day break in the Lake District. The accommodation was comfortable and adequate and reasonable value for money. We particularly enjoyed the evening meals with the thoughful and sensibly priced wine list. There were plenty of enjoyable walks on the doorstep

Really a gastro pub with rooms - we had three of their 10 en suite rooms for two nights and rated them as highly as any we have stayed in in the Lake District at this price. This is not the height of sybaritic luxury - if you want that in this area stay at The Samling or Holbeck Ghyll and pay accordingly - but The Three Shires is very comfortable. I cannot disagree more with HappyWalker11 and can only assume that he was unfortunate. Dinner on both nights was excellent - good Lakeland portions of palatable fare at reasonable prices. My only reason for marking The Three Shires down would be the rather chaotic service at breakfast. One rather harassed waitress when the establishment was full was not enough for all the guests. Even so, she was very pleasant, so do not let this put you off.

A gem of a find and we would happily go there again.
