“Deliciously filling”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2014

Had dinner in here as a treat & a break from cooking up pasta in the tent. They stop serving around 9pm so we were lucky to still get something when we turned up at 8.50. I was really glad they managed it because the lamb stew was absolutely delicious and there was so much that my boyfriend had to finish it off. I usually never leave without dessert so that is testament to just how filling it was! I'd definitely eat here again.

“LOVELY AND RELAXING”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2014

We visited this lovely pub this week and it is so traditional looking with all the wood beams and what smelled like lovely meals but i never tasted as i was staying at The Patterdale Hotel which is actually next door.

“A Mixed Bag”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2014

Always use this is a post-walk venue when in this area, previously just for drinks but this time round decided to sample the food. I had lamb stew which was excellent, really tasty and came with two chunks of crusty bread and pickled red cabbage which was a welcome touch. Unfortunately, the missus had fish and chips which left a lot to be desired - anaemic batter and oven chips, for goodness' sake! Why do good, home-cooked food on the one hand and frozen chips on the other?
Service was average, lad behind the bar was a bit surly but serving staff were OK.
Local real ale good, but surprised only one on offer amongst the usual generic fizzy rubbish.
Overall, not a bad place per se, just a typical example of a pub that knows it's going to get plenty of trade from tourists/walkers no matter what so perhaps feels it doesn't have to try particularly hard.
Note: their car park is available to walkers (good starting point for several walks) for £4 which you get refunded off your bill if you go there for drinks/food.

“Good food - poorly behaved customers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2014

We have been to this quaint pub several times when in this part of the Lake District and have always been happy with the food, beer & service. However on this occasion although the food was as good as before there were several (obviously local) men swearing and behaving in an anti-social manner in the bar. The young bar staff were joining in! Not too impressive when it was late afternoon / early evening and there were young families present.

We will visit again when next in the area and hope it was a one-off although I notice a similar review recently. Perhaps the management need to take note after all there are 100's of pubs in the Lake District looking to the seasonal trade.

“Food was just ok but the service was dire”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014

They really need to get some more staff & train them a bit better.I'd hate to see what the service would be like on a busy night.
