“Day 4 of our Coast to Coast: dinner B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

A really interesting friendly and enthusiastic owner here.

We had the separate accommodation at the rear of the hotel with nice views over the river. It is warm and cosy and has lots of nice touches and will be even better when refurbished over the winter time. If you stay in this room look out for Cyril the ironing assistant hiding behind the wardrobe. He's great and has an official badge so don't accept impostors. We do hope he stays after the refurb.

Substantial interesting choice of food - hearty rather than chefy.

Everything about the place is excellent - the staff are friendly and helpful, the food is scrummy, the bedrooms are beautiful with teddies on the beds, the views are superb, the position is fantastic and the cosy bar has a huge assortment of drinks for such a small establishment.
Went in January and going back in December twice!

Room Tip: All lovely

We were booked into Old Water View by Coast to Coast Packhorse, so being newbies we didn't realize that we were going to such a C2C icon and shrine!

This is a terrific place. Ian is the most knowledgeable. enthusiastic and sympathetic host you could ever wish for and he runs an establishment which is truly welcoming. We were very, very comfortable and happy here and the lovely meals and top-notch beer just added to the delight.

This is one of the places where a little voice said "this is too nice; abandon the walk and stay here" but in fact you couldn't because you'd feel that Ian was so much on your side that you'd be letting him down if you didn't continue.

The location is nice too - a riverside building with tables outside where you can sit with pleasant evening pint and chat with other walkers.

This place all feels like a happy accident but in fact I think it is very cleverly managed for success - it hits its market absolutely perfectly and sets a tone which is immediately appealing to walkers.

I would very cheerfully go back to Old Water View tomorrow. What a great place.

We too took advantage of a half price stay advertised in our local newspaper and used it to stay overnight to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary. Ian made us feel very welcome right from the beginning. We got to stay in a room called La'l Gem which was separate from the main building. It was idylicc and overlooked the river and the daunting Place Fell. We loved everything about our stay and we didnt want to leave. We ate in the hotel and found the food to be very tasty, a few things were forgotten or missed but to be honest we didn't care as we are fairly laid back people. Despite the weather being very wet we managed a walk around Brothers Water, a 5 minutes drive away. We are lucky to only live 50 minutes from Patterdale so plan to come back and say hello to Ian and have a drink and meal here when we do. Thank you Ian for making it so special for us. tgewo to

We recently had a lovely 1 night stay here. Ian was an incredably friendly host and we decided to dine in. We were glad we did as the home cooked food was delicious (as was the complimentary bottle of wine!). I must say however that the highlight of the stay was meeting Lorna. Her wonderfully addictive and bubbly personality really set me up for the day!

Highly recommended!
Four of us were booked in for one night, Sunday 13th Oct. On arrival, the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The rooms we were given were clean, nice and cosy, and once the bags were dumped we were off to Glenridding for a bit of Geocaching! We were ready for our evening meal and the food didn't disappoint. Starters, mains and sweet courses were lovely, and after that it would've been rude not to par-take in a some sherbets at the bar! A good variety of beers, lager and spirits were on offer, and we had a nice relaxing evening talking with Ian (the owner) who has a vast knowledge of the C2C, Wainright and the Lakeland hills in general. After a good night's sleep (the bed was very comfortable) the breakfast was fantastic, again with plenty of variety.....and the home made marmalades are delicious!
All in all, a lovely break away in a superb guest house.
The next time we jaunt to Ambleside or Windermere, we'll be calling in for coffee or afternoon tea....unless I can get more time off work and we get another night away to stay here again!

Bought a voucher from local paper, and couldn't use in the time given but on ringing up there was no problem. The owner was really helpful and gave us plenty of choice. We booked a table for the evening meal and were given of bottle of very nice wine to accompany our meal.
This was a one night break to explore Ullswater Lake very beautiful. Excellent evening meal, good chat in the bar. Good nights sleep and an excellent breakfast. Would definitely return.
